Position Summary:

Under the supervision of OIC/Utilities Manager, it is preferred for the individual to have an aptitude for the operation, repair and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment. Also helpful is an aptitude for math and chemistry with the ability to work in adverse conditions both environmental and climatic. The employee in this position will be trained to meet the requirements to be able to test for their MDEQ Class “D” license which includes 2080 hands on hours.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Set up lab and calibrate all analytic equipment for sampling ammonia’s, BOD’s PH and DO’s.
  • Record all flows and reading per EPA reporting requirements.
  • Perform daily lab analytic of required samples per EPA permit requirements.
  • Perform biweekly lab analytic of required samples per EPA permit requirements.
  • Set up reactor analytic for daily operation.
  • Perform influent 7 day BOD’s.
  • Collect and prepare samples for sampling per EPA and DEQ permit regulations.
  • Check out and calibrate (if required) all flow proportional equipment such as screen building, effluent pumps and filter building.
  • Perform analytic for ultra violet disinfection per percentage and quantity removed.
  • Set up and calibrate 24-hour samplers and ferric chloride injection pumps.
  • Perform flow proportional and back washing schedule for titration filters.
  • Assist maintenance employees.
  • Perform all wastewater readings at lift stations per EPA permit requirements (weekends & holidays)
  • Take required classes offered by Indian Health, USEPA, DEQ, and Michigan Rural Water Association.
  • Troubleshoot and adjust process to deal with changing parameters of raw sewage.
  • Willing to gain extensive knowledge on all types of wastewater treatment plants to meet state and federal requirements to become certified class D.
  • Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Contacts/Purpose of Contacts:

  • Contact with supervisors and managers, with associates in organizations and occasional contact without side sources. The purpose of contacts would be to plan, organize and coordinate work activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be willing to take classes in microbiology, advanced math and beginning algebra courses.
  • Must be skilled in the operation, repair and maintenance of mechanical, lab equipment and electrical equipment.
  • Must be willing to perform hands on janitorial and grounds keeping duties.
  • Must be a member of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.
  • A math test will be required and administered prior to interview.
  • Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.

License, Certification, or Special Requirements:

  • Required to take confined space and hazardous material classes with certifications through the USEPA, Indian Health and Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver’s License and must be able to obtain and maintain a Tribal Driver’s License and qualify for coverage by SCIT auto liability insurance carrier.
  • Native American preference shall apply to all positions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of mechanical and building trades.
  • Skill in operation, repair and maintenance of mechanical, lab equipment and electrical equipment.
  • Skill in math and chemistry preferred.
  • Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs in a Windows environment.
  • Skill in using hand and power tools.
  • Ability to operate and maintain mechanical equipment.
  • Skill in effectively listening.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Ability to climb high stairs and ladders.
  • Ability to use chlorine test kit, snake machine, and voltage meter.
  • Ability to anticipate, recognize and evaluate hazardous conditions, as well as develop hazard and safety control methods.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to operate of motorized equipment including snow plows and lawn movers.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with the individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.

Physical Demands:

  • Strenuous physical exertion in climbing ladders and lifting heavy objects.
  • Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with repair equipment.
  • Required to stand and walk for extended periods of time and reach with arms and hands.
  • Occasionally sit, stoop, kneel, climb, balance, crouch or crawl.
  • Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:

  • Must possess sufficient stamina to work under all types of weather conditions including extreme hot/cold and to lift, carry, push, or pull a variety of tools, equipment and materials.
  • Employee may be exposed hazardous areas dealing with confined space, methane gas, carbon monoxide, disease carrying bacteria and oxygen depleted areas.
  • Work is performed in noise, wet, and hot enclosed spaces and heights.
  • Position requires on call 24/7.
  • Work alternating weekends and holidays.
  • Travel is required.
