Days and Shifts: 1st Shift, M-F. Some Nights and Weekends


Position Summary:

Under the supervision of Tribal Administration, coordinate and schedule community recreation activities. Primary focus will be to actively engage community members through various activities as an outlet. Implement and promote sports, cooperative games, and fitness as a model for healthy lifestyles. Supervise and train Recreation employees and ensure adherence to mandated reporting laws.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop strategy to involve youth and community in planning stages regarding community and youth activities.
  • Ensures the efficient financial management of the department to include: developing and administering the department budget, authorizing expenditures and or recommending approval to Tribal Administration and Tribal Council.
  • Maintain a schedule of employees and events with tribal community and other departments to avoid the scheduling of conflicting events.
  • Ensure all sports and activities are conducted according to safety guidelines and are age-appropriate.
  • Ensure that the facility, equipment, and sport fields are well maintained.
  • Coordinates set-up, storage, and tear-down of equipment.
  • Maintain building policies & procedures as they relate to scheduled events and activities.
  • Member of Tribal Emergency Response Team.
  • Research grant opportunities and work with Grants Department to obtain additional funding.
  • Develop overall long-term goals for department and employees.
  • Conduct analysis on effectiveness of Recreation area and recommend appropriate changes.
  • Provide monthly activity reports using quantitative and statistical data.
  • Serve as a positive role model for all youth.
  • Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

The duties and responsibilities will be subject to change based on organizational needs and/or deemed necessary by the supervisor.

Contacts/Purpose of Contacts:

  • Contact with employees within the organization and members of the community (youth and families).
  • Contact with external agencies, schools, youth facilities, jails, and other tribal communities.
  • Contact with SCIT Public Health to implement activities which may potentially reduce the risk of diabetes and obesity.
  • Contact with SCIT 7th Gen and Ziibiwing to infuse cultural aspects into planned activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in Sports Administration, Recreation or related field.
  • Three years’ experience working with and managing youth and recreational activities and programs. One year in a supervisory capacity.
  • An equivalent combination of education and directly related experience may be considered.
  • Experience with planning and implementation of youth programming.
  • Experience with local school programming, requirements and policies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including nights, holidays and weekends.
  • Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience working with Native communities.

License, Certification, or Special Requirements:

  • Must be able to obtain CPR and First Aid Certification within three months from date of hire.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver’s License and must be able to obtain and maintain a Tribal Driver’s License and qualify for coverage by SCIT auto liability insurance carrier.
  • Native American preference shall apply to all positions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of motivational tactics and how to actively engage youth using positive reinforcement.
  • Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic arithmetic.
  • Knowledge of arts, crafts, sports and recreation activities suitable for youth.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of center-based recreational program delivery.
  • Knowledge of department organization, functions, objectives, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of records management procedures.
  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines.
  • Skill in preparing, reviewing, and analyzing operational and financial reports.
  • Skill in supervising, training, and evaluating assigned staff.
  • Ability to calmly handle emergency situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and carry out instructions both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
  • Ability to represent organization in a professional manner, building respect and confidence in the community.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with computer equipment.
  • Strenuous activity involved with regularly scheduled activities, and events.
  • Required to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally reach with arms and hands, bend, crouch, and crawl.
  • Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:

  • Normal interior environment.
  • Must possess sufficient stamina to work under all types of weather conditions including extreme hot/cold and to lift, carry, push, or pull a variety of tools, equipment and materials.
  • May include stressful situations and potential hazards..
  • Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
  • Exposure to childhood colds, viruses.
  • Travel may be required.
