Under the general direction of Fire Department command staff, or designee. Performs responsible work protecting lives and property by combating and extinguishing fires, as well as providing advanced emergency care, life support, and/or transportation of the sick and injured. Work involves maintaining fire equipment and apparatus and responding to other emergencies or non-emergency situations in accordance with City codes and Departmental policies. Work may be performed under situations extremely hazardous to personal health and safety. Work may include medical supervision and direction of subordinates in emergency situations. Work is observed through observation and results obtained.- Responds to emergency calls and provides advanced emergency medical care as outlined by Pinellas County.
- Contacts physicians through the radio communications system to relay information, receive instructions, and prepare medical facilities to receive and treat patients.
- Assists and may supervise in providing basic emergency care, such as performing appropriate rescue and extrication procedures, controlling hemorrhages, applying splints, placing injured or ill persons on stretchers and transporting them in ambulances; provides continuing care, allays fears, and comforts patients while en route to hospital.
- Responds to fire calls; assists in the suppression of various kinds of fires; drives fire apparatus to and from emergency scenes.
- Prepares reports and maintains records of cases handled.
- Participates in training subordinate personnel as required.
- Attends and assists in maintenance and cleaning of fire apparatus equipment and facilities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
- Knowledge of advanced emergency medical procedures, equipment, and equipment maintenance.
- Knowledge of Departmental policies, procedures and regulations.
- Knowledge of the geography of the City.
- Knowledge of the local hospital emergency rooms policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of emergency driving techniques.
- Knowledge of radio communication design and maintenance.
- Ability to read and understand Departmental policies, rules and instructions, and written material in the field of emergency medicine.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
Graduation from high school or equivalent (GED); State certification as a Paramedic and Firefighter; Valid Florida Driver’s license.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
- Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid).
- Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
- Reaching, bending, lifting.
- Use of fingers, use of hands.
