Under the close supervision of Fire Department command staff, or designee. Performs responsible work protecting lives and property by combating and extinguishing fires. Work involves maintaining fire equipment and apparatus and responding to other emergencies or non-emergency situations in accordance with City codes and Departmental policies. Work may be performed under situations extremely hazardous to personal health and safety. Work is observed through observation and results obtained.- Combats various types of fires and provides other emergency services such as brush, structural, automobile, oil, chemical and gas, using a variety of firefighting equipment and tools such as hose and nozzle, axe, pry bars, hand fire extinguishers and other equipment.
- Must be familiar with personal protective equipment including SCBA’s.
- Operates fire apparatus on emergency and non-emergency calls, driving to and from scenes.
- Ensures apparatus and equipment is of operational readiness at all times.
- Responds to emergency calls and non-emergency; performs essential services.
- Cleans truck and fills with water; replaces equipment; checks hose; checks personal equipment; performs routine housekeeping and maintenance of fire station.
- Attends and participates in training exercises to include simulated fire combat situations; ladder exercises; pre-planning; and familiarization with new or existing equipment and techniques.
- Additional duties may be assigned to include assisting with routine maintenance and repair of trucks, equipment or station facilities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of the basic principles and practices of firefighting techniques.
- Knowledge of basic first aid and first responder (basic) life support techniques.
- Knowledge of city streets and building locations.
- Ability to perform physically demanding and strenuous tasks under hazardous conditions.
- Ability to deal effectively with citizens affected by emergency circumstances.
- Ability to operate Department apparatus safely, to and from emergency or non-emergency scenes.
- Skill in the use of basic firefighting and emergency medical treatment equipment and techniques.
Graduation from high school or equivalent (GED); supplemented by State Certification as a Firefighter and EMT; or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. CPR certified. Valid Florida Driver’s License. NIMS I-100, I-200, I-700. County certification must be obtained during initial probationary period. Maintenance of State and County EMT.
Ability to obtain State of Florida Paramedic Certification within first three years of employment, or date of hire.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
