Recovery Coach / Certified Peer Specialist (Pregnancy2Recovery Peer Provider)

The Pregnancy2Recovery Peer Provider offers non‑clinical, recovery‑oriented peer support to pregnant and postpartum individuals. Through shared lived experience, mentorship, advocacy, and resource navigation, Peer Providers help participants build recovery capital, engage in prenatal and postpartum care, strengthen parenting confidence, and pursue their self‑identified goals.

Peer Providers collaborate with hospitals, clinics, treatment providers, and community agencies while upholding the values and principles of peer support, including mutuality, empowerment, and respect.

Minimum Qualifications

Required

Completion of Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) Training (48 hours), or

● CCAR Recovery Coach Academy (30 hours) with willingness to obtain Wisconsin CPS certification.

● Demonstrated personal wellness and ability to model recovery principles.

● Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation if driving participants or traveling between sites is an essential function.

● Ability to maintain professional boundaries and uphold peer support ethics.

Preferred

● Experience supporting pregnant or parenting individuals (as a parent, partner, caregiver, or professional).

● Knowledge of local recovery, healthcare, and community resources.

● Experience in healthcare, treatment, harm reduction, or family support settings.

Additional Program Requirement

● Willingness to complete agency‑sponsored Community‑Based Doula Training.

● Interest in providing emotional, informational, and practical support during pregnancy, birth preparation, and the postpartum period.

● All genders are welcome to train and serve as doulas.

Essential Responsibilities

Peer Support Services

● Provide one‑on‑one peer support to pregnant and postpartum individuals.

● Use lived experience appropriately to foster hope, empowerment, and connection.

● Support participants in identifying and achieving self‑directed recovery goals.

● Assist individuals in building healthy support systems and community connections.

● Offer support before, during, and after treatment episodes.

Pregnancy2Recovery Program Responsibilities

● Support participants throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period.

● Assist with accessing prenatal, postpartum, and other healthcare services.

● Provide education and support related to recovery, parenting, and community resources.

● Help participants navigate healthcare systems, treatment providers, social services, and family support programs.

● Support participants during hospital admissions related to pregnancy and childbirth when appropriate.

● Assist with planning for labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery.

● Encourage engagement in treatment, recovery support, and harm reduction services based on participant goals.

● Provide support related to family reunification, child welfare involvement, and parenting concerns when applicable.

● Connect participants to housing, transportation, food resources, childcare, and other community supports.

Doula Development Responsibilities

● Participate in agency‑sponsored doula training.

● Develop skills to provide emotional and informational support during pregnancy and childbirth.

● Collaborate with healthcare providers to support positive birth experiences.

● Integrate peer support and doula services to provide comprehensive support to families.

Collaboration & Documentation

● Maintain timely and accurate documentation in agency systems.

● Communicate effectively with program staff, healthcare providers, and community partners while maintaining confidentiality.

● Participate in team meetings, supervision, and reflective supervision.

● Attend required trainings and professional development opportunities.

● Narcan Administration

● Perinatal Substance Use & Recovery

● Recovery Coaching & Peer Support Best Practices

● Community‑Based Doula Training

● Additional trainings required by partner hospitals or healthcare systems

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

● Understanding of recovery‑oriented systems of care.

● Ability to establish trusting, non‑judgmental relationships.

● Strong communication and advocacy skills.

● Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

● Knowledge of Dane County resources or willingness to learn.

● Ability to maintain professional boundaries while using lived experience appropriately.

● Commitment to person‑centered, trauma‑informed, and culturally responsive care.
