Now Hiring: Controller (Construction Industry)
We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead the accounting and financial operations for our construction organization. This role is responsible for overseeing job cost accounting, general ledger, and monthly close while ensuring accurate project financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with GAAP and construction industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all accounting operations, including general ledger, job cost accounting, and financial reporting
- Oversee job cost tracking, project budgets, cost-to-complete analysis, and variance reporting
- Own the monthly close process, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable, including vendor payments, customer billing, lien waivers, and collections in accordance with contract terms
- Review and reconcile bank accounts, cash disbursements, retainage, and other balance sheet accounts
- Ensure accurate processing and posting of daily cash receipts and customer payments
- Manage work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, percentage-of-completion accounting, and revenue recognition
- Establish and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls aligned with construction best practices
- Partner with operations and project managers to provide financial insights on project performance, margins, and risk
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and construction-related reporting requirements
- Coordinate and support internal and external audits by providing documentation and responding to audit requests
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting team members
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- 7 years of progressive accounting experience, with significant experience in the construction industry
- Strong knowledge of job cost accounting, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion accounting
- Experience overseeing AP/AR, billing, retainage, and cash flow management
- Proven ability to design controls, improve processes, and manage deadlines in a project-driven environment
- Proficiency with construction accounting systems and advanced Excel skills
- Strong leadership, analytical, and communication skills
