What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at Ryan Miller & Associates?
Position: Controller
Location: Irvine, CA (Onsite)
Compensation: ~$200K base bonus
Reports to: CFO
About the Company:
An established yet fast-growing mid-size company in the financial services sector is seeking a highly detailed, hands-on Controller to lead its accounting function. The organization is scaling rapidly, and the CFO is looking for a strong financial leader to ensure the company’s accounting infrastructure can support that growth.
About the Role:
This is a highly technical, detail-driven Controller position — ideal for someone who loves numbers, thrives on accuracy, and isn’t afraid to dig deep into complex reconciliations and transaction-level accounting. The Controller will oversee a team of three while partnering closely with FP&A and Treasury to strengthen financial visibility and process discipline as the company scales.
You’ll manage the monthly close process, oversee external audits, and ensure the books are reconciled correctly and on time. This is not a “big picture only” role — it’s hands-on and analytical, requiring someone who can spot issues early, identify variances, and proactively fix problems before they reach the executive level.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Oversight
- Lead the accounting function, managing a team of three.
- Oversee all aspects of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process.
- Lead the annual external audit (mid-sized firm) and ensure timely completion.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and other regulatory requirements.
Operational Accounting
- Maintain accuracy across GLs and complex transaction streams.
- Implement stronger front-end controls and oversight to reduce post-close corrections.
- Drive continuous improvement in accounting processes and systems, leveraging automation where possible.
Strategic Partnership
- Partner with FP&A to ensure visibility into revenue recognition, trends, and anomalies.
- Support the executive team with reliable, real-time financial information and insights.
- Collaborate with Treasury and help define the strategic distinction between Accounting and Treasury functions.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred.
- 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including prior Controller experience.
- Strong technical accounting and reconciliation skills — accuracy and detail orientation are essential.
- Proven ability to lead and develop accounting teams.
- Hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves mindset; comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Excellent communicator who can partner effectively with FP&A, Treasury, and the CFO.
- Strong systems aptitude and understanding of modern accounting tools.
Why This Role:
This role offers the opportunity to bring structure and discipline to a growing organization — building confidence in the numbers, refining processes, and serving as a trusted financial partner to the CFO and executive team. If you’re a senior accounting leader who loves the details and takes pride in accuracy, this position offers both impact and visibility.
