Ruxton Animal Hospital is an AAHA accredited and Fear Free Certified veterinary hospital that has provided quality veterinary care in the Towson area for 20 years. Along with an ownership change 7 years ago came an influx of new clients and new demands on our practice. In order to effectively continue our current rate of growth, we are avidly seeking an experienced Veterinary Technician to join our team.
Position Summary
The primary focus of the Veterinary Technician at Ruxton Animal Hospital is to assist the practice in providing exceptional medical quality and patient care at all times. The Veterinary Technician will behave as an advocate for pets and will work with clients and the veterinarian to meet patient needs with professionalism, accuracy, and great care. Those operating as a Veterinary Technician are required to have the ability to manage stress and maintain composure in a demanding, fast-paced environment, they must show a willingness to adapt to changing priorities, and will provide a variety of support to the veterinarian(s), practice manager, client support team, medical support team and kennel technicians. Other commitments include but are not limited to; performing custodial and administrative tasks directly related to hospital operations and patient care, phlebotomy, assisting in anesthetic procedures, perform laboratory duties, dispensing medications, prepare and perform treatments, manage the flow of appointments, educate clients and ensure a safe hospital environment, executing precise record keeping, communicating urgent and/or pertinent observations to veterinarian, monitoring/maintaining medical supplies and pharmacy, retaining practical knowledge of veterinary practice organization, terminology, services, rules and regulations. Essential Functions
- General Patient Care: Admit and secure all patients, boarders, and hospitalized pets, ensure all receive the highest level of comfort and care. Perform/Assist in a variety of tasks as directed by the veterinarian (this includes, low-stress restraint, demonstrating preliminary exams, recording/reporting vital signs and findings, preparing and/or performing injections, assist with executing treatments, x-rays, diagnostics, collecting and preparing samples, filling medications). Assist in providing hospital stays with a pristine environment, adequate bedding, fresh water and clean litter (for cats) and keep areas free of excessive temperatures, noise and noxious smells. Assist in kennel duties as needed (including but not limited to, walking, feeding, medicating, bathing boarders).
- General Anesthesia: Closely monitor patients, provide detailed observations, alert veterinarian and/or registered technician of abnormalities, prepare patient and equipment for procedures, set-up and administer fluid therapy, assist in the premedication, induction and intubation of patients undergoing anesthesia, meticulously record anesthesia readings, chart, scale, and polish teeth.
- Facility Maintenance & Housekeeping: Ensure kennels remain clean and odor-free. Assist in general decluttering, cleaning, and sanitization in all areas of the hospital. Assist in upkeep of hospital laundry, floor care, refrigerators, walls, etc; Maintain all surgical equipment, surgery packs, surgical inventory, and surgery suite. Perform maintenance and repair needs of hospital equipment, such as Anesthesia Cart, Dental Cart, Autoclave, Radiology Machine(s), In-House Lab Machines, Microscope, etc;
- Monitoring & Maintaining Hospital Stock: Verify Fear Free tools, pharmacy, medical, office and cleaning supplies are adequately stocked. Alert appropriate team members of low supply and hospital needs in a timely manner. Assist in restocking hospitals and unpacking packages received. Keep track of pharmacy expiration dates.
- Maintaining Records: Thoroughly and accurately gather, report, and document sensitive and necessary information. Record complete notes in a timely manner in SOAP format, documenting medical history, exam findings, treatments, medications, and at home care instructions. Fill all necessary hospital use forms thoroughly, as directed.
- Misc. Management of Hospital Operations: Transport/Move pets safely. Keep a calming demeanor and provide anxious pets company as needed. Review and communicate alerts on patient/client dashboards. Assist with patient handling, appointment prep, filling medications, and client communications. Learn a variety of veterinary software (such as, Avimark, Timeless, ClientHQ). Know location of MSDS logs and ensure secondary containers are appropriately labelled.
Physical Requirements
With the exception of ADA accommodation, associates must meet the physical demands necessary to successfully perform the primary functions of their role. Performance expectations frequently require individuals to bend, stand, stoop, walk, sit, handle, feel, reach, talk, listen and must be able to lift up to 40 pounds of weight.
Work Environment
The majority of this position will be performed in a hospital environment, occasionally tasks may require to be executed outdoors and/or in a loud setting. While performing the duties of this job, associates may be exposed to hazardous conditions associated with fractious patients, zoonotic/contagious diseases, controlled substances, gas, chemicals and/or radiology.
Other Requirements
** 1 years experience as a veterinary technician required
All associates must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19
As a Fear Free Practice, all associates in this position will be required to complete the Fear Free certification process
Knowledge of Avimark a plus
License preferred
