Otter Valley Unified Union SD is accepting applications for an Behavioral Intervention Specialist to begin working at Otter Valley Union Middle and High School in August 2026. It is anticipated that the primary focus will be on supporting high school learners assigned to the schools alternative program, both in the alternative program space and general education settings.The Behavior Intervention Specialist is responsible for providing a positive and successful experience for student(s) identified through the EST, 504 or special education process as needing help with social, personal and/or behavioral issues. This is to be accomplished in accordance with all relevant legislation, policies and procedures. The Behavior Intervention Specialist will be responsible for supporting student(s) within the classroom, school or community setting.

The student(s) may remain constant over time or fluctuate depending upon the needs of the program, and will be a combination of 1:1 and small group support based on student need. They must ensure the development and safety of these students in accordance with federal and municipal legislation and policies. The Behavior Intervention Specialist will be respectful of the students and their parents, and should help to keep facilities safe, and well maintained. The primary task of the Behavior Intervention Specialist is to provide successful and rewarding educational experiences to students with social, emotional and/or behavioral issues as identified through a Behavior Intervention Plan.

Behavior Intervention Specialists need to be able to respond to the social/emotional needs of students in a safe and proactive manner. It is expected that the Behavior Intervention Specialist not only implement the instructional strategies set forth by general/special educators but also be able to create redirection and reintegration strategies to support inclusion. Following the instructional directions of the special educators or building administrator, the Behavior Intervention Specialist is to provide individual or small group instruction and such other strategies as necessary to achieve classroom and 504/IEP goals Behavior Intervention Specialists are expected to model positive pro-social behavior on the job. This includes daily interactions with students and staff/faculty as well as any verbal interactions with or about students.

Behavior Intervention Specialists are primarily assigned to SUCCESS suites, de-escalation spaces, and alternative program sites. It is imperative the Behavior Intervention Specialist keep in daily communication with the case manager and keep required data on student behavior and progress. It is important for the Behavior Intervention Specialist to understand any specific strategies and behavior plans that exist for students to assure their implementation as well as understanding specific classroom rules and how the two interface. The case manager is the first line of communication and needs to be kept abreast of the students progress and any issues that arise in supporting the student.The following qualifications are required: Experience with students with disabilities preferred.
