What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tapestry & EPIC - Summer Camp Lifeguards - PAID Training Program position at Rutland City Public Schools?
The Rutland City Public Schools Tapestry & EPIC Summer Program is currently seeking kind, dynamic, and passionate professionals to join our team as we deliver high-quality, Summer Camp enrichments that will challenge our students in their growth and development.
Successful Lifeguards are people who possess the skills and knowledge to implement a developmentally safe environment in and around water. Lifeguards do this by actively implementing policies, procedures, and appropriate training to keep children safe and, as needed, perform necessary interventions for distressed children in and around water environments.
Ideally, all applicants are high school graduates. We will accept applications from students at least 16 years of age, preferably 18, who have experience working with children in a public school or a licensed child care setting.
The program is currently looking for 15 candidates.
The program will provide paid training, certification, and other employment, up to 40 hours each week, for six weeks of summer camp.

Please note: The following are academic/physical prerequisites to achieve proper certification:
Pass and complete the Online Blended-Learning Training, which will be sent out approximately two weeks before in-person training.
Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping:
Jump into the water and totally submerge.
Resurface and swim 350 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both. Swimming on back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles are allowed.
Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading using the legs only.
Swim 200 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both.
Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
Starting in the water, swim 20 yards (face may be in or out of the water, no goggles allowed).
Submerge to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face at or near the surface.
Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Complete an underwater swim:
Swim 5 yards, submerge, and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4-7 feet of water. Resurface and continue to swim another 5 yards.
College students who are offered and accept summer camp employment will also be offered school-year days/hours if desired, before the start of camp, to provide a more comprehensive summer employment schedule.
Overview of responsibilities:
Lifeguards maximize student engagement and outcomes by promoting safety in and around water.
They work with program staff to create safe play, inquiry, and exploration in water environments.
They may be called upon to rescue struggling swimmers of any age to avoid a potentially hazardous situation.
In general, a Lifeguard will:
1. Possess/Maintain a current Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (required)
2. Actively and positively engage with all students during all program activities
3. Make decisions regularly, independently, and quickly
4. Work as a team with other lifeguards, staff, and management
5. Possess/Maintain Current CPR/First Aid/AED Certification
6. React quickly and appropriately to emergencies
7. Maintain situational awareness at all times
8. Actively guard and scan the water areas at all times
9. Communicate and enforce all Tapestry & EPIC aquatic safety policies and procedures
11. Represent the Tapestry & EPIC programs positively and professionally.
Recruiting will continue until the positions are filled.
