What are the responsibilities and job description for the Instructional Aide/ESL position at Royal Junior High?
Primary Purpose:
Provide instructional assistance and language-development support to English Learners (Emergent Bilingual students) under the direct supervision of a certified teacher/ESL-certified staff member. Assist with preparing, conducting, and managing classroom activities that support students’ English language acquisition and access to grade-level content.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Associate’s degree, two years of study at an institution of higher learning, or have met formal academic assessment as required by the No Child Left Behind Act
Valid Texas educational aide certificate
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to assist in supporting English language development (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) using teacher-directed strategies
Knowledge of common ESL accommodations and sheltered instruction supports (e.g., visuals, sentence stems, vocabulary supports) preferred
Ability to work well with children
Ability to communicate effectively
Experience:
Some experience working with children
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
English Learner Support
1. Provide teacher-directed support to English Learners individually or in small groups to reinforce language objectives and content learning.
2. Assist the teacher in preparing language supports (visuals, word banks, sentence frames, anchor charts) and classroom materials aligned to lessons.
3. Assist with the administration of classroom assessments and work assignments as directed; provide approved linguistic accommodations in accordance with campus/district procedures.
4. Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom that supports language-rich instruction (organized materials, labeled visuals, and student access to resources).
5. Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of instructional materials and technology used to support English Learners.
6. Assist the teacher with collecting and organizing documentation/data related to English Learner progress as directed (e.g., work samples, intervention logs), while maintaining confidentiality.
7. Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers regarding classroom routines and approved English Learner supports as directed.
Model and prompt appropriate academic language through guided practice, conversation protocols, and sentence stems.
Support vocabulary development and comprehension through read-alouds, shared reading, and structured writing activities as directed.
Assist with TELPAS-related preparation activities and campus procedures as assigned (training required; no independent scoring/ratings).
Support communication with families using district-approved translation/interpretation procedures as directed.

8. Make the teacher aware of language needs, special needs, or concerns impacting English Learners; support positive, culturally responsive classroom interactions.
