What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sound Technician position at Royal Caribbean Group?
The Sound Technician (SOUN) is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and technical execution of all sound systems across various entertainment venues onboard. This includes supporting produced shows, live events, and other entertainment activities. This position must be performed in alignment with ship‑specific and show‑specific SOPs and the applicable responsibility matrix.
All duties are carried out in accordance with Royal Caribbean International’s The Royal Way, SQM standards, USPH guidelines, and environmental and safety policies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain all audio systems used for entertainment venues and events.
- Ensure safe and effective use of audio equipment at all times.
- Support a variety of produced entertainment, activities, and special events.
- Perform duties across multiple venues throughout the ship, as required.
- Maintain professionalism and courtesy at all times, following Royal Caribbean’s Anchored in Excellence philosophy.
- Interact respectfully with guests and fellow crew members during all physical and verbal engagements.
- Adapt to operational needs, including working in different venues as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
- Preferred experience in musical theater and show control systems.
- Proficient in operating analog and digital sound consoles.
- Working knowledge of, and ability to perform, basic troubleshooting and maintenance on:
- Audio consoles
- Backline equipment
- Outboard audio equipment
- Speaker components (including detecting and replacing blown drivers)
Ability to:
- Physically set up and strike bands
- Apply proper microphone and stage monitor placement
- Operate recording and playback devices
- Strong expertise in live audio production, including:
- Microphone and monitor placement
- Front‑of‑house (FOH) mixing
- Monitor mixing
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment, collaborating with other technicians and performing artists.
- Preferred understanding of computer networking.
- Proficient in software applications related to entertainment technology.
- Strong analytical skills to assess and evaluate technical support needs.
- Commitment to staying up to date with industry advancements and best practices.
