The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office was established in 1753, with the Sheriff as the only officer. The Sheriff’s Office now consists of a total of 207 employees that provide professional law enforcement to the citizens of Rowan County. During 2003, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office was awarded the J. Stannard Baker Award, a national award for outstanding achievement in highway safety.
The Rowan County Detention Center is a 210 bed, direct supervision facility made up primarily of dormitory style housing units. The Rowan County Detention Center Annex facility can house an additional 160 inmates. The annex facility is comprised of four (4) 40 -inmate dormitories. Both facilities are self-sufficient operations consisting of housing, food service and laundry facilities that maintain a high level of service on a daily basis.
The Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications for the position of Detention Officer. This position enforces rules and regulations of the Detention Center; screens incoming inmates for contraband; secures inmate’s personal belongings; patrols the Detention Center and performs cell block searches; renders emergency assistance as necessary; and serves in a continuous on-call status due to the nature of the work.
Requires the ability to effectively restrain an inmate, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints and to subdue resisting inmates; ability to endure abusive comments and hostile views and opinions of inmates; ability to complete jailer certification courses; and the ability to evaluate and make decisions in critical situations. Requires high school diploma or GED, completion of Basic Detention Officer Training, minimum age of 20, favorable psychological evaluation, background investigation, CVSA, successful completion of physical fitness assessment, and favorable completion of medical examination with negative drug screen. A valid driver’s license is required.
