What are the responsibilities and job description for the Heavy Equipment Maintenance Mechanic position at Route 20 Auto Parts, Inc.?
About the Role
We’re a high-volume auto salvage yard and our equipment works hard every day. We need a reliable, self-directed mechanic to own our preventative maintenance program — the person who makes sure every machine is checked, serviced, and running before operations start at 8:00 AM.
This is a keep-it-running role, not a rebuild shop. Your job is daily checks, fluids, greasing, and catching problems early. When you find something that needs real repair, you write it up and we schedule the fix — with you or an outside shop depending on the job.
The Fleet You’ll Maintain
- Volvo excavator with attachments
- 2 Bobcat skid steers
- 2 wheeled loaders (Develon and XCMG)
- Box truck
- Fluid drain station and air compressor
What You’ll Do Each Shift
- Complete the full pre-operation inspection checklist on every machine: fluids, filters, grease points, tracks/tires, hydraulics, attachments, leaks, belts, batteries, lights, and safety systems
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance per manufacturer intervals (oil changes, filter swaps, greasing, fluid top-offs)
- Cold-start and warm up all equipment so every machine is ready for operators at 8:00 AM sharp
- Maintain the drain station and air compressor in safe working order
- Issue a written condition report for anything that needs repair or is showing early signs of a problem — no surprises, no “it just broke”
- Keep maintenance logs current for every machine
- Flag parts and supplies that need ordering before they run out
Saturday Shift (9 AM–1 PM)
Deeper work that doesn’t fit the weekday window: scheduled services, minor repairs from the week’s reports, shop organization, and catching up any machine that needs extra attention.
What We’re Looking For
- Proven experience maintaining heavy equipment — excavators, skid steers, loaders, or comparable diesel machinery
- Strong diesel engine and hydraulic system knowledge
- Able to work independently with no supervision at 5 AM — you’re often the first one on the yard
- Disciplined about checklists and written reports; if it isn’t logged, it didn’t happen
- Own basic hand tools (specialty tools and supplies provided)
- Valid driver’s license
- Reliable — the whole yard’s day depends on machines being ready at 8:00
Nice to Have
- Experience with Volvo, Bobcat, Develon/Doosan, or XCMG equipment specifically
- Welding/fabrication ability for minor repairs
- Experience in a salvage/recycling yard or construction environment
- Ability to occasionally take on scheduled repair jobs beyond the PM scope (paid additional hours)
Why This Job Works
- Short, consistent shifts with real responsibility and zero micromanagement
- Early mornings, done before most people start their day
- Steady year-round work — equipment needs maintenance in every season
Room for extra paid hours if you want the repair work too
