Job Description

 

JOB TITLE: Elementary Life Skills Teacher

This position will commence with the 2026–2027 school year, beginning in August 2026

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Washington state certification; special education endorsement in teaching area as required; course work and/or experience appropriate to the assignment.Must successfully pass a criminal history check.

 

REPORTS TO: Building principal and/or Director of Special Education.

 

SUPERVISES: Students with disabilities and classroom para educator(s) as assigned.

 

JOB GOAL: To provide the instruction and/or accommodation necessary for students with disabilities and receive a free and appropriate education in the school setting.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Protect the confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines.
  2. Develop and maintain a positive classroom environment. Establish and maintain collaborative professional relationships with others.
  3. Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, parents and colleagues concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of students.   
  4. Teach students to set and maintain high standards of classroom behavior by developing a written classroom plan that is connected to the school wide behavior expectations (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports). 
  5. Participate in district-wide improvement efforts/district initiatives.
  6. Engage in professional learning and implement strategies to support the learning needs of multilingual learners. 
  7. Maintains forms and procedures required by special education regulations and/or by the Director of Special Education.
  8. Assesses students’ academic, social, and/or life skills needs using standardized instruments, appropriate curriculum-based measures, and/or district-wide assessments.
  9. Makes program and accommodation recommendations based on assessment results.
  10. Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  11. Writes IEPs and mandated paperwork within the appropriate timeframe; schedules and attends IEP meetings. Evidence of maintaining a positive, productive learning climate within the classroom as well as with parents and colleagues.
  12. Implement an evaluation system to measure student performance.
  13. Teaches objectives and maintains necessary tracking information to demonstrate student progress toward objectives.
  14. Provide consultation and support services to students in a large classroom environment.
  15. Assist students who are physically challenged with movement to participate in activities or with other physical needs, when necessary.
  16. Establish the schedule, role, responsibilities, and expectations for the paraprofessional(s) assigned to assist the teacher.
  17. Modify instructional materials and instruction to meet students' diverse needs and create an educational environment conducive to learning.
  18. Remain knowledgeable about the regular curriculum in the student's current grade levels being taught.
  19. 19. Demonstrate computer literacy (e.g., familiarity with Google Suite, Qmlativ, IEP management system, etc.).
  20. Provides a variety of experiences so that students may develop their skills and understandings through academic, social, and vocational classes.
  21. Participates in Professional Development and staff meetings as required.
  22. Carries out student discipline in accordance with district policy, disciplinary guidelines, and the student rights and responsibility code.
  23. Is responsible for updating inventories and turning in the end-of-year reports.
  24. Communicates and cooperates with professional peers and administration. Works within integrated settings when appropriate.
  25. Performs such other duties as may be required of the position or assigned by the administration to fulfill the mission and role of the school and community.
  26. Complete needed state assessments.

Be able to perform job tasks as follows:

  • Lift and carry 10-50 pounds frequently.
  • Assist with lifting over 50 lbs. frequently
  • Provide care to clients in toileting-requires transferring weight skills.
  • Use restraint techniques with clients when necessary.
  • Be able to bend, kneel, squat, twist, turn, and extend arm use involving various weights frequently.
  • Be on your feet for the majority of the work shift.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.

 

LIMIT OF AUTHORITY: Has authority over students and classroom para educator(s) as assigned.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Contractual agreement in accordance with WAC parameters of state laws and Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), district rules and regulations, and administrative directives.

 

LENGTH: 180-day work year
SCHEDULE: 7:30 am-3:00 pm
SALARY AND BENEFITS: As determined by the Board of Directors, state law, local board policy and GEA bargaining agreement.

EVALUATION: At least annually on/before May 1st by the Director of Special Education. New or probationary employees are evaluated more often as per state law, WACs, GEA CBA, and district policy.
