Roof Above is NC’s most comprehensive homeless service provider. Our mission is to unite our community to end homelessness, one life at a time. Focusing on individuals experiencing homelessness, Roof Above offers everything from street outreach to shelter to Rapid Rehousing to Permanent Supportive Housing. Roof Above’s services and programs reach over 1,300 individuals every day across nine campuses in Charlotte. Roof Above was born through the merger of Urban Ministry Center and Men’s Shelter of Charlotte in 2019.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Volunteer Coordinator is primarily responsible for overseeing the day-to-day volunteer activities and tasks at Roof Above’s Day Services Center. This includes orienting, training, coordinating, and nurturing individual and group volunteers who provide services and engagement at the Center. Additional responsibility includes responding to volunteer and in-kind inquiries to cultivate engagement. The Volunteer Coordinator also assists with organizing and managing in-kind giving as well as organizational education as directed. The position will also at times engage directly with neighbors on a limited basis.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Recruit, schedule, train, and supervise individual volunteers for the Day Services Center, including positions within Basic Services and the Resource Center.
- Provide a welcoming presence to all volunteers and attend to volunteer morale.
- Serve in a Basic Services function, if needed (doing neighbor laundry, checking mail, monitoring showers, and the like).
- Help to ensure that volunteer stations at the Day Services Center are set-up and ready for volunteers’ arrival.
- Respond to volunteer and in-kind inquires via phone and/or email.
- Assist with organization and distribution of in-kind donations at the Day Services Center.
- Assist with group engagement and volunteering, as directed.
- Maintain all agency and outside agency resources current to keep volunteer informed.
- Assist with oral and written communications to and with volunteers.
- Help coordinate Volunteer Appreciation/Recognition events.
- Maintain a working knowledge of the volunteer software management system (currently Volunteer Hub).
- Participate in staff training and meetings, as appropriate.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
- Minimum of associate degree required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred in Volunteer Management, Non-profit Management, Human services or related field or Volunteer Management Certification and equivalent experience.
- Flexibility, comfort in a busy and at times chaotic environment, and ability to multi-task
- Demonstrated ability to successfully work in a collaborative environment that places a high value on teamwork.
- Experience working with people experiencing homelessness.
- Volunteer management experience in a non-profit setting with proven leadership ability
