POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Communications and Marketing lead the marketing, public relations, and media services efforts for Rogers State University. This individual will serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet and Leaders Council providing vision, oversight, and management of strategic communications, marketing, media relations, publications, and web/social media across the institution in support of the mission of the University.

This individual will lead a team of practitioners responsible for executing a comprehensive marketing program, implementing strategies to increase awareness and positive brand recognition to attract students, motivate alumni and donors, and position the University as a first-choice institution.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Formulate and apply consistent brand messaging comprehensively across all earned, owned, and paid channels to support the mission and achieve strategic initiatives of the university.
  • Develop and oversee communications/marketing for reaching diverse audiences that RSU serves and seek to serve more fully. Audiences include, but are not limited to, prospective traditional students and their families, K-12 (guidance counselors, teachers, and superintendents), adult prospective students, community agencies and organizations, business and industry, elected officials, and the media.
  • Work with senior officials, faculty, and staff to identify strong messages, compelling stories to build on the university’s reputation.
  • Report out metrics on the effectiveness and impact of communication and marketing efforts and campaigns.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with other departments across campus such as academic affairs, admissions, and student affairs by working collaboratively, providing follow-up, timely and successful project completion.
  • Direct media buys and maintain vendor contracts keeping up to date with constant technological advances in advertising and communications.
  • Oversee the University’s media relations strategy, while maintaining key relationships with local, regional, and national news outlets (traditional print, social publications, and broadcast) to increase knowledge of university programs through news releases.
  • Manage internal/external communication needs and directives of the Office of the President and Executive Council, including the ability to write official university announcements and statements in time sensitive situations.
  • Anticipate and mitigate adverse or potentially negative issues that may impact the University’s reputation; maintain issues management and crisis communications plans and work collaboratively while providing proactive counsel to senior leaders in the event of a crisis.
  • Manage the University’s RAVE alert system.
  • Manage the development, content creation, timely production and distribution of special university publications including but not limited to annual reports, magazines, newsletters, brochures, and online content.
  • Support the digital communications strategy for the University, integrating web platforms, social media, and video production.
  • Oversee daily activities of marketing and communications staff including budgeting, planning and professional development.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Outstanding management and planning skills, with the ability to handle multiple initiatives and projects simultaneously; the ability to productively and pro-actively plan for the future, even as urgent issues and time-sensitive needs regularly emerge.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills for a multitude of audiences and a strong sense of marketing promotional messaging.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate in a clear and persuasive manner.
  • Ability to inspire and creatively engage team members, colleagues, and senior leadership in achieving and supporting strategic communications plans.
  • Ability to create, implement and successfully manage an annual budget.
  • A high level of professional integrity and ethics, and the ability to handle sensitive issues and situations with discretion.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • Three or more years combined professional experience in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • Work experience as a supervisor with increasing responsibility.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree
  • Experience in communications and marketing at a college or university.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to operate keyboard, move across campus and operate a motor vehicle.


REPORTS TO: Vice President for Development


LOCATION: Claremore Campus                                                                                  


HOURS: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. -5 p.m. Some evening and weekend hours may be required.


POSITION: Exempt
