Human Resources Generalist

Job Summary
The Human Resources Generalist at Rockford Ambulance is responsible for providing comprehensive support in all areas of human resources, including recruitment, onboarding, benefits administration, employee relations, compliance, and training coordination. This position plays a key role in ensuring that HR practices align with company policies, state and federal employment laws, and the organization’s mission to provide exceptional emergency medical services to the community.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage the full-cycle recruitment process, including job postings, candidate screening, interviewing, and onboarding.
- Maintain accurate and confidential employee records in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Administer employee benefits programs, including health, dental, vision, life insurance, and retirement plans.
- Serve as a point of contact for employees regarding HR-related inquiries, policies, and conflict resolution.
- Review payroll prior to processing by ensuring accurate and timely submission of employee data and changes.
- Review payroll before processing.
- Ensure compliance with all federal and state regulations related to Human Resources. Examples are FMLA, ADA, FLSA, OSHA, EEOC, ESTA.
- Support management in employee performance evaluations, corrective actions, and disciplinary procedures.
- Coordinate new hire orientation and ongoing training initiatives.
- Participate in policy development and recommend improvements to HR systems and processes.
- Prepare HR-related reports and metrics as requested by management.
- Maintain and promote a positive, professional, and confidential approach in all HR activities.
- Clerical Duties.

- None directly.
- May provide guidance or training to department support staff or interns as assigned.
Reports To
- Human Resources Manager or Director of Administration (depending on organizational structure).
Physical Demands / Working Conditions
- Work is performed primarily in an office environment.
- May occasionally require travel between Rockford Ambulance locations or to training sessions.
- Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods, use a computer, and communicate effectively via phone and email.
- Occasional lifting of office materials up to 25 pounds.
- Must maintain confidentiality and composure in a fast-paced, sometimes high-stress EMS environment.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; talk and hear; use fingers, hands, and arms to handle, reach, and/or operate basic office equipment, objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move with assistance, up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field required.
- 2–4 years of HR experience is preferred; experience in healthcare or public safety is a plus.
- HR certification (PHR, SHRM-CP) preferred but not required.
- Must pass pre-employment process.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must have a good driving record.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- High level of integrity and discretion in handling sensitive information.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and HRIS/payroll systems (experience with Paycor or similar systems a plus).
- Ability to work independently while supporting a collaborative team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

Pay: $60,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
