Vice President of Finance / Controller

As a privately held, growing organization enters its next phase of development, we are seeking a Vice President of Finance / Controller to serve as the senior financial leader of the business. This is a hands-on, high-impact leadership role responsible for overseeing all accounting, financial reporting, project costing, and financial planning & analysis functions.
The ideal candidate brings deep experience in the construction or project-based services industry, with strong expertise in job costing, Work in Progress (WIP), and percentage-of-completion accounting, and thrives in an environment that values operational partnership, financial discipline, and long-term value creation.

What You’ll Do
Financial Leadership & Strategy
- Act as the company’s senior finance executive, partnering closely with ownership and executive leadership
- Translate operational activity into clear, actionable financial insights
- Support strategic planning, growth initiatives, and capital decisions
Accounting, Reporting & Controls
- Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, fixed assets, and monthly close
- Ensure timely, accurate financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Maintain strong internal controls and compliance across all financial processes
- Manage external relationships with lenders, auditors, insurance providers, and tax advisors
Project Costing, WIP & Performance
- Lead all job costing and WIP accounting, including percentage-of-completion revenue recognition
- Ensure accurate tracking of costs, margins, change orders, and project profitability
- Partner with operational leaders to identify risks, improve margins, and enhance project outcomes
- Oversee backlog reporting, forecasting, and cash flow visibility
Financial Planning & Analysis
- Own budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis across the organization
- Develop KPIs and dashboards focused on profitability, labor efficiency, cash flow, and execution quality
- Provide analytical support for pricing, bidding, and resource allocation decisions
Team Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting and finance team
- Build scalable systems, processes, and reporting structures to support continued growth
- Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement
What We’re Looking For
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Significant experience in a construction or project-based environment
- Strong command of job costing, WIP, and percentage-of-completion accounting
- Proven experience leading and developing finance/accounting teams
- Ability to operate at both strategic and tactical levels
Preferred
- CPA or equivalent certification
- Experience in a privately held, owner-operated organization
- Familiarity with construction ERP and project accounting systems
- Strong communication skills and the ability to partner effectively with operations
