We are seeking a dependable and experienced Planer Operator to join our
lumber mill team. This position is responsible for setting up,
operating, and maintaining planer equipment to produce high-quality
finished lumber according to grade and customer specifications. The
ideal candidate has strong mechanical skills, understands lumber grading
standards, and prioritizes safety and efficiency in a production
environment.
### Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate planer machines to meet production and quality
- Adjust planer settings for thickness, width, and surface finish
- Monitor lumber flow and identify defects or quality issues
- Ensure finished lumber meets grade specifications
- Inspect equipment daily and perform routine maintenance and knife
- Troubleshoot mechanical and production issues
- Maintain accurate production reports
- Work closely with graders, stacker operators, and maintenance staff
- Follow all safety policies and OSHA regulations
- Maintain a clean and organized work area\
- 2 years of experience operating a planer in a lumber mill
- Strong understanding of lumber dimensions, grades, and moisture
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform minor equipment repairs
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, industrial setting
- Willingness to work shifts, overtime, and weekends as needed
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods\
- Knowledge of NeLMA grading rules
- Experience with automated planer lines and optimization systems
- Forklift or loader experience
