GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Park Maintenance Technician I performs manual and semi-skilled work and operates light motorized equipment to maintain Roanoke County parks, athletic fields, and facilities. Parks Maintenance Technicians’ tasks may include routine mowing, landscaping, athletic field maintenance, minor facility and equipment repairs, event support, park patrol, cleaning, storm debris removal, and other related duties to support department initiatives. Additionally, all Parks Maintenance Technicians are classified as “Essential Personnel” and may be occasionally required to work extended shifts, nights, weekends, and/or during emergency weather events.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
~ Performs routine maintenance of parks, athletic fields, and amenities (e.g., pavilions, playgrounds, hardscapes), including mowing, trimming, litter/debris removal, and basic landscaping.
~ Operates light motorized equipment and vehicles (e.g., mowers, small tractors, field groomers, chippers) and tows trailers as needed for park and facility operations.
~ Uses hand and power tools to support park maintenance, minor repairs, and basic construction tasks (e.g., carpentry support, painting, simple fixture/amenity repairs).
~ Conducts routine operator care of assigned equipment and vehicles using checklists (e.g., fueling, greasing, cleaning, basic preventive maintenance checks) and reports maintenance concerns.
~ Assists with minor equipment servicing and simple repairs within training/authorization; coordinates with supervisors/maintenance staff for more complex repairs.
~ Loads, unloads, and transports materials, supplies, and equipment to and from work sites; assists with site setup and breakdown.
~ Follows required safety practices, PPE requirements, and operational procedures to reduce risk to employees and the public.
~ Supports snow removal operations at County-maintained sites and participates in countywide emergency response/storm cleanup as assigned (Essential Personnel).
~ Provides support for tourism, recreation, and athletic events, including basic event setup, staging, and post-event cleanup.
REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES
Education:
Preferred: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
Required: Experience in the operation of motorized equipment and/or grounds maintenance.
Certifications/Licenses:
Required: Valid driver’s license with a good driving record. First Aid/CPR and forklift certification or ability to obtain within first year of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to safely operate small, motorized equipment and basic hand and power tools. Ability to work outdoors in varying temperatures and inclement weather and perform physically demanding work.

Additional Requirements:
Subject to a complete criminal history and Child Protective Services background check and DMV driving record review with acceptable results. Following a conditional offer of employment, must pass a post offer physical examination. Must be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description. Subject to twenty-four-hour on-call and work varied shifts as assigned.
