GENERAL DESCRIPTION

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
~ Operates assigned equipment to support park and athletic field maintenance, including tractors with attachments, multi-deck mowers, chippers, small engine equipment, and related specialized turf/agricultural equipment.
~ Operates trucks and trailers, and may operate CDL equipment (e.g., dump truck) as assigned and in accordance with license and training requirements.
~ Performs routine park maintenance tasks, including mowing, trimming, landscaping, athletic field grooming/lining support, and general grounds upkeep.
~ Assists with turf management activities by calibrating, applying, and documenting fertilizers, herbicides, and other grounds products as directed and in accordance with applicable requirements.
~ Performs routine operator inspections and basic maintenance of equipment, vehicles, and trailers; reports needed repairs; makes minor adjustments within training and authorization.
~ Loads, unloads, and transports tools, equipment, and materials to and from work sites; assists with staging materials for projects and events.
~ Performs basic carpentry, masonry, and hardscape repairs to park amenities (e.g., fences, benches, signage supports, edging, minor concrete/brick repair) as assigned.
~ Assists with park maintenance and restoration work (e.g., landscaping, fence repairs, amenity maintenance) under direction, following standard methods and quality expectations.
~ Uses basic measurements and layouts (e.g., string lines/levels) to support drainage and small site improvements as assigned; not responsible for project surveying or design.
~ Supports snow removal operations at County-maintained sites and participates in countywide emergency response/storm cleanup as assigned (Essential Personnel).
~ Supports departmental tourism and athletic events through setup, breakdown, and site readiness activities.
~ Follows all safety policies and procedures, including PPE use, equipment safety checks, and safe work practices for traffic/work zones when applicable.
REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES
Required: High school diploma or equivalent. Preferred: Coursework or training in turf management, forestry, landscaping, or a related field.
Experience:
Required: Minimum three years of experience operating motorized equipment in grounds maintenance or a related field. Preferred: Experience in athletic field and/or park maintenance operations; experience operating specialized turf/ag equipment.
Certifications/Licenses:
Required: Valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Class A CDL or ability to obtain within six months of employment. Fertilizer Applicator certification or ability to obtain within six months of employment. Registered Technician Certificate from Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services or ability to obtain within six months of employment. First Aid/CPR and forklift certification or ability to obtain within one year of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of safe operation of assigned trucks, trailers, and specialized parks maintenance equipment. Working knowledge of grounds and athletic field maintenance methods and materials. Ability to calibrate, apply, and document grounds products as directed and in compliance with requirements. Ability to perform routine inspections and basic equipment maintenance; ability to recognize and report mechanical issues. Ability to communicate professionally with the public and work effectively as part of a crew. Ability to perform heavy manual labor and work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and adhere to safety procedures.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position is not a formal supervisory role. May provide task assistance to peers (e.g., demonstrating safe equipment use or work methods) as requested by supervision.
Additional Requirements:
Subject to a complete criminal history and Child Protective Services background check and DMV driving record review with acceptable results. Following a conditional offer of employment, must pass a post offer physical examination. Must be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description. Subject to twenty-four-hour on-call and work varied shifts as assigned.
