Drill Truck Operator
Job Summary
The Drill Truck Operator is responsible for operating truck-mounted drilling equipment (auger/pressure digger) to install poles, signs, foundations, and related infrastructure. This position requires precision, strong safety awareness, and the ability to work around underground utilities and active roadways.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate drill truck/auger equipment to drill holes for poles, signs, traffic signals, and foundations
- Set poles and structures using hydraulic boom and auger systems
- Read and interpret construction plans, staking sheets, and utility locates
- Identify and safely work around underground utilities (811 system compliance)
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of truck and drilling equipment
- Conduct routine maintenance (greasing, fluid checks, minor repairs)
- Ensure proper hole depth, diameter, and alignment per project specifications
- Assist crew with layout, material handling, and site preparation
- Maintain safe work zones, especially in roadway/traffic environments
- Complete daily logs, equipment reports, and job documentation
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED (preferred)
- Valid driver’s license (CDL Class A or B typically required)
- Experience operating drill trucks, augers, or similar heavy equipment (preferred)
- Knowledge of construction and/or traffic signal installation (preferred)
- Familiarity with underground utility locating practices
Skills & Abilities
- Strong understanding of equipment operation and jobsite safety
- Ability to read blueprints and grade/measure accurately
- Mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and minor repairs
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Work Environment
- Outdoor construction sites, often along roadways or highways
- Exposure to extreme weather, noise, and heavy equipment
- Work in close proximity to traffic and underground utilities
- May require travel, overtime, and occasional night work
Certifications (Preferred/Required Depending on Employer)
- CDL (Class A or B)
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
- Traffic Control/Flagger Certification
- First Aid/CPR
- DOT Medical Card
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 50–75 lbs
- Frequent standing, bending, climbing, and walking on uneven terrain
- Ability to climb in and out of truck and operate controls for extended periods
Pay: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour
