About RMS

Headquartered in North Andover, Massachusetts, RMS International (USA) is a toy manufacturer, creating and marketing highly trending products that excite children around the world, giving them an amazing experience at affordable prices. Our mission is simple – we bring the magic of play to everything we do.

Role Overview

We’re looking for an Industrial Designer with a concentration in toys and play products who is excited by variety, enjoys working across multiple projects, and can move ideas forward efficiently. This role blends creative ideation, play pattern thinking, and hands-on product development, with the opportunity to see concepts move from sketch to shelf in a relatively short timeframe.

The ideal candidate understands how kids (and kidults) play, thinks in terms of features, value, and price points, and can design with manufacturing realities in mind—without losing the magic of play.

Key Responsibilities

Concept & Play Development

  • Design original toy and play concepts across multiple categories and price points
  • Develop clear play patterns, mechanisms, and interactive features
  • Translate trends, cultural moments, and buyer insights into engaging product ideas
  • Contribute informed input during brainstorming sessions and design reviews
  • Communicate concepts clearly through sketches, diagrams, and simple narratives

Design Execution (3D & Visualization)

  • Independently complete 3D modeling, rendering, and print-preparation tasks
  • Create fast, effective sketches, CAD models, and presentation visuals
  • Consistently deliver high-quality renderings with accurate lighting, camera angles, scale, and sticker/deco setup
  • Evaluate designs for structural integrity, tolerances, and functional feasibility
  • Validate wall thickness, part separation, scale, tolerances, and basic assembly logic prior to prototyping
  • Iterate designs efficiently based on feedback, testing, and costing requirements

Prototyping & Product Development

  • Prepare files for 3D printing and physical prototyping
  • Troubleshoot execution or production issues and propose practical design solutions
  • Collaborate with the Studio team and external partners to refine designs
  • Review samples and provide clear, actionable feedback
  • Participate in basic play testing and refinement cycles

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Studio team and Buyers on active projects
  • Support buyer-facing materials with clear product visuals, feature callouts, and play diagrams
  • Assist in preparing concepts and samples for sales presentations and trade shows

Team Contribution & Mentorship

  • Provide informal guidance or support to Interns or Junior 3D Designers when needed
  • Share best practices related to modeling, rendering, and prototyping workflows
  • Contribute positively to a collaborative, fast-paced Studio environment

How We Work at RMS

Designers at RMS typically work on multiple projects at the same time, often across different categories. Timelines move quickly, but the environment is collaborative and supportive, with a focus on steady progress rather than over-polishing.

Success in this role requires the ability to sketch ideas quickly, visualize concepts clearly, and communicate design intent efficiently. Strong ideas are developed through teamwork, iteration, and momentum.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design, Toy Design, Product Design, or related field
  • 2–6 years of experience designing toys or play-focused consumer products
  • Strong understanding of play patterns, age grading, and toy safety considerations
  • Proficiency in modeling for manufacturing CAD (Rhino, Fusion 360 or equivalent), KeyShot, and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Strong 3D modeling, rendering, and visualization skills
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, multi-project environment

Bonus Skills (Nice to Have)

  • Familiarity with toy costing and price-point-driven design
  • Experience working with overseas manufacturers
  • Knowledge of plastics, plush, compounds, or simple mechanisms
  • Experience supporting full product development cycles
  • Comfort collaborating directly with Product or QA partners

What Success Looks Like

  • Clear, compelling concepts that move efficiently from idea to development
  • Strong collaboration with the Studio team, QA and Buyers
  • High-quality 3D execution that translates smoothly to prototyping and production
  • Consistent contribution across multiple projects and categories
  • Strong in proactive decision making
