Position Summary
The Stationary Engineer is responsible for performing continuous 24-hour monitoring, inspection, and recording services for HVAC, utility distribution, and auxiliary safety equipment across assigned VA Medical Center buildings. This position conducts inspections every two (2) hours in accordance with VHA Directive 1028, documents all readings, identifies deficiencies, and initiates corrective actions for safety hazards or system failures. The Stationary Engineer operates and maintains complex utility equipment and must possess strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform two-hour interval inspections of at least 6 different buildings, documenting results on VA-provided checklists.
  • Monitor, record, and analyze system temperatures, pressures, flows, water levels, electrical readings, refrigerant values, and control system performance.
  • Recognize abnormal operating conditions and immediately report deficiencies to the Supervisor and VA Engineering Service.
  • Conduct emergency shutdowns or make interim repairs to ensure safe operation and prevent damage to VA property.
  • Operate, regulate, and adjust mechanical systems including:
    • Air handling units
    • Chillers and associated pumps
    • Boilers and fuel systems
    • Cooling towers
    • Air compressors
    • Distribution controls and electrical switchgear
  • Log and evaluate water chemistry conditions; add chemicals per established procedures.
  • Perform operator-level maintenance such as lubrications, filter replacements, belt adjustments, refrigerant additions, cleaning strainers, and minor repairs.
  • Assist mechanics during major overhauls of chillers, cooling towers, pumps, electrical equipment, and other utility systems.
  • Follow all VA safety protocols, PPE requirements, and infection-control provisions.
  • Maintain all logs, records, and performance documentation in accordance with VA and contractor standards.
  • Work independently and make sound decisions during urgent and emergency situations.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of documented journeyman-level experience in HVAC, utility plant operations, or stationary engineering.
  • EPA Universal (Type I, II, III) Certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate industrial HVAC and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic, electronic, and mechanical control systems.
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, gauges, and technical manuals.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify system failures quickly.
  • Able to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
  • Must pass VA background checks and meet credentialing requirements.

Physical Requirements
  • Occasional lifting of equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Standing, walking, stooping, bending, ladder climbing, and working in tight spaces.
  • Exposure to high-heat areas, noise, chemicals, and contaminated materials.

Preferred Qualifications
  • DC Stationary Engineer License or ability to obtain.
  • Experience working in medical centers, federal facilities, or mission-critical environments.
  • Experience complying with VHA or Joint Commission standards.
