Riverview School District is seeking candidates for an elementary school nurse for the 26-27 school year.

Job Title: Nurse

Department: Health Services 

Reports to: Building Principal

Classification: Non-Exempt 

 

Summary

The Nurse is responsible for appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, management and/or referral activities. The nurse serves as the direct link between physicians, families, community agencies to assure access and continuity of health care of students. The nurse also provides relevant instruction, counseling, and guidance to students, parents, staff, and others concerning health-related issues.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Collaborate with school staff members, parents, and students to address health needs of students and supervise personnel or renders first aid care to students in cases of accidents or illnesses.
  2. Act as an advocate for students and family in interdisciplinary collaboration including IEP conferences as appropriate.
  3. Participate in school Emergency/Crisis plans.
  4. Conceptualize and communicate the nursing role in the school setting as an integral part of the community.
  5. Identify community agencies as resources for health care needs of students and/or families.
  6. Apply appropriate theory as a basis for decision making in the school setting for nursing management of: common acute and chronic physical conditions of childhood and adolescence, child and adolescent injuries, child abuse and neglect, adolescent pregnancy, childhood and adolescent substance abuse, poverty and racism and their effects on child development and child health, environmental health issues.
  7. Interpret the immunization law to school personnel and parents; assess students’ immunization status and notifies parents of deficiencies. 
  8. Share responsibility with other staff members in screening those students who are ill or should leave the classroom, and follows procedures for excluding students with communicable diseases.
  9. Conduct and/or facilitate screening exams to identify health deficits of students including vision and hearing screening, scoliosis screening, kindergarten pre-enrollment, dental screening, and preschool screening.
  10. Observe for deviations from normal growth and counsel with parents and students when appropriate.
  11. Conduct and/or facilitates screening exams for staff including immunization, demography, tine testing and hepatitis B.
  12. Intervene as guided by the nursing care plan to implement nursing actions that promote, maintain, or restore health, prevent illness and effect rehabilitation.
  13. Assess student responses to nursing actions in order to revise the database, nursing diagnosis and nursing care plan and to determine progress made toward goal achievement.
  14. Supervise the administration of medication and the administration of medical procedures as prescribed by state guidelines.
  15. Recognize and report any health or safety hazards to the site administrator.
  16. Identify health problems and need for new programs and contributes to a comprehensive school health program.
  17. Develop and implement health policies in collaboration with other school nurses, administration, and the Board of Education.
  18. Assist in alternate or supplemental funding sources for health or health related programs as needed.
  19. Supervise the maintenance of assigned supplies and equipment.
  20. Provide for the appropriate accessibility, recording and utilization of confidential information related to school health and health related services.
  21. Obtain written authorization for release (from the parent in the case of a minor) of information from the student health record to outside agencies.
  22. Maintain and/or supervise the accurate documentation and maintenance of information, records, and reports:
    1. Health Records for each student (separate from students’ academic records and in a locked file)
    2. Incident Reports
    3. Daily logs of illness/injuries
    4. Annual Immunization Report, CD 31
    5. Annual Health Services Report
    6. Emergency info for staff members
    7. Other reports as needed
  23. Support health and safety instruction in the school.
  24. Provide individual health teaching and counseling for and with students as appropriate.
  25. Promote the application of health principles within all areas of school services (food services, custodial, etc.).
  26. Communicate with staff and parents regarding individual student health concerns and universal precautions.
  27. Comply with all Riverview School Board of Education policies.
  28. Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal.

Qualifications

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Current Arkansas Registered Nurse License or LPN License

Education and Experience

Graduated from an accredited School of Nursing

 

Skills and Abilities

Language

Read, analyze and interpret administrative procedures and forms and governmental regulations and guidance written in English; complete forms, write reports and engage in written correspondence with parents; and present information effectively and respond to questions.

Computation

Have the ability to work with basic mathematical concepts and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning 

Solve a variety of problems in many different situations and interpret instructions presented in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Technology

Perform basic computer functions such as word processing and internet use; use district software for finding student information.

Additional Skills and Abilities

Have knowledge to uphold professional nursing standards, follows the State Nurse Practice Act as well as other state and local statutes or regulations applicable to school nursing and adheres to District to District policies and Administrative Guidelines; have skills in oral and written communication, human relations, background in emergency and/or first aid care, current CPR certification, ability to screen vision, hearing and scoliosis; demonstrate computer applications; and have the abilities to information effectively in one to one and small group situations effectively work with students, staff, parents, and the community apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed instructions and resolve problems that arise in the school setting.

 

Physical Demands

An individual who holds this position must have the ability to speak and hear in an environment where numerous conversations and activities may be taking place simultaneously; move around the school building as needed for student and adult care; and bend, stoop, reach, and kneel.

 

Interpersonal Skills

Maintain effective working relationships with students, co-workers, administrators and members of the community. 

 

Attendance

Regular and consistent attendance is an essential function of this position.
