Overview

Riverside Healthcare in Kankakee, Illinois, is seeking a skilled and compassionate Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (RN) to join our acute care team. The ideal candidate will provide exceptional patient care to expectant mothers and their newborns in a fast-paced and supportive environment. As a Labor and Delivery RN, you will work closely with obstetricians, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe and positive childbirth experiences, managing both routine deliveries and emergency situations with competence and empathy. Additionally, this position requires flexibility with assignments within professional scope/duties/licensure.

Essential Duties

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to women before, during, and after labor, including monitoring maternal and fetal vital signs, administering medications, and assisting with epidurals.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team to develop and implement individualized care plans for patients.
  • Provide emotional support and education to patients and their families throughout the labor process.
  • Monitor labor progression using fetal monitoring devices, and respond to any abnormalities or emergencies as necessary.
  • Assist in all aspects of labor, including preparing patients for delivery, guiding mothers through labor, and coaching during pushing.
  • Assist physicians with vaginal deliveries and Cesarean sections (C-sections), including prepping the delivery room and ensuring sterile environments.
  • Provide immediate newborn care, including resuscitation and APGAR scoring, as needed.
  • Provide postpartum care to mothers and newborns, including administering medications, monitoring recovery, and facilitating skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding support.
  • Educate patients and families about postpartum care, newborn care, and any discharge instructions.
  • Respond to obstetric emergencies such as preeclampsia, hemorrhage, and fetal distress with quick thinking and effective interventions.
  • Participate in Code OB, Code Blue, or other emergency protocols as necessary.
  • Team member will maintain annual education requirements

Non-essential Duties

  • Participate in departmental meetings and continuing education opportunities.
  • Assist with maintaining cleanliness and inventory in the labor and delivery unit.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to nursing students or newly hired RNs as needed.

Responsibilities

Preferred Experience

  • Minimum of one year of experience as an RN in Labor and Delivery, Mother/Baby, or Womens Health preferred.

Required Licensure/Education

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program
  • RN license in the state of IL required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification Required
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification Required (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NPR) Certification Required (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) Certification Required (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
  • *New Graduate RNs starting on or after 1/1/25 must earn Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) within 3 years of start date

  • BSN preferred*

  • Chemicals: Disinfectants, Betadine, room deodorizers, Alcohol, others per MSDS sheets
  • Video Display Terminals: Average
  • Blood and Body Fluids: Frequent contact with IV devices and high potential for contact with contaminated body fluids (blood, vomitus, stool and amniotic fluid) does create a high risk. However, appropriate usage of needleless IV system, universal precautions, and protective equipment should greatly minimize risk.
  • TB or Airborne Pathogens: Minimal risk exists, given the patient population; however, usage of protective clothing and universal precautions minimize any existing risk

Sensory Requirements (speech, Vision, Smell, Hearing, Touch)

  • Speech: Required to communicate with patient, family and MD's
  • Vision: Needed to perform necessary assessments of patient status; medication administration; usage of computer terminals.
  • Smell: Helpful to note presence of incontinence, vomitus, blood; electrical/fire safety.
  • Hearing: Needed to hear patient call lights, calls for help, patient concerns; alarms (i.e. monitors, fire codes, via PA)
  • Touch: Needed to perform percussive assessments and to comfort patients; manipulate tools

Lifting of patients off their beds that are unable to move independently is done with assistive lifting equipment. Horizontal movement of patients to and from carts/beds who are unable to move independently is done with assistive lifting equipment. Lifting equipment - carry 25'-150' waist high (IV bags, patient trays). Carry charts 25'-150' waist high. Filled laundry bags are filled half full so as not to weigh over 35 lbs. Carry fire extinguishers up or down 3-4 flights of stairs and several yards in an emergency.
