Building Porter

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
• Mix water and detergents or cleaning chemicals in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications.
• Clean windows, glass partitions, or mirrors, using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, or squeegees. Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
• Requisition supplies or equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
• Dust furniture, walls, machines, or equipment.
• Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors. Steam clean or shampoo carpets.
• Clean and polish furniture and fixtures.
• Move heavy furniture, equipment or supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks.
• Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, or parking areas, using snowplows, snow blowers or snow shovels, or spread snow melting chemicals.
• Monitor building security and safety by performing tasks such as locking doors after operating hours or checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created.
• Service, clean, or supply restrooms. Gather and empty trash.
• Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Educational Requirements:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience and Minimum Requirements:

• Excellent customer service skills.
• Working knowledge of janitorial equipment, tools, and materials.
• Must be available for emergency work.
• Bi-Lingual is a plus.

Testing:

• Drug screening, as permitted by, and consistent with, applicable law.

Physical Requirements:

Persons performing service in this position classification may routinely exert up to 80 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. This type of work will involve regular walking or standing for extended periods of time. It may involve stooping or bending. Handling and working with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
