Job Summary:
The Yard Foreman is responsible for leading and overseeing daily operations in the lumber yard, with a focus on supervising the delivery load builders and ensuring accurate, timely, and safe preparation of customer orders. Reporting directly to the Delivery Manager, this role plays a key part in coordinating product staging, enforcing safety protocols, and maintaining operational efficiency.
The Yard Foreman works closely with the inventory, warehouse, and delivery teams to support customer fulfillment and uphold company standards. This position may also provide occasional backup support for deliveries as needed. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of lumber and building materials (LBM) handling and logistics.
Key Responsibilities:
Team Leadership & Supervision:
Lead and supervise the load building team responsible for preparing delivery orders. Ensure accountability for performance, order accuracy, and adherence to company procedures.
Order Staging & Fulfillment:
Oversee the staging of LBM and millwork products for delivery. Ensure materials are properly tagged, organized, and ready for loading according to delivery schedules.
Safety & Equipment Oversight:
Enforce safety protocols and proper equipment usage, including forklifts and material-handling tools. Conduct regular safety checks and ensure team compliance with workplace safety standards.
Inventory Coordination:
Communicate with the Inventory Manager regarding product availability, discrepancies, and special order handling. Support inventory control efforts through accurate documentation and product organization.
Process Execution & Quality Control:
Ensure all yard operations follow defined procedures for load building, product handling, and shrink reduction. Monitor team performance and implement improvements as needed.
Facility Organization & Maintenance:
Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free yard environment. Oversee product storage zones and ensure materials are handled and stored properly.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Work closely with the Delivery Manager, drivers, and warehouse staff to ensure smooth handoff of staged orders and efficient delivery execution.
Delivery Support (As Needed):
Provide occasional backup support for deliveries during peak periods, staffing shortages, or high-demand situations, ensuring safe and professional operation of company vehicles.
Training & Development:
Assist in onboarding and training new yard personnel. Provide ongoing coaching to ensure team readiness and adherence to operational standards.
Qualifications:
Experience:
Minimum of 2–3 years in yard, warehouse, or delivery operations, preferably within the lumber and building materials industry.
Skills:
Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to train and supervise team members effectively.
Technical Knowledge:
Familiarity with LBM products, load building procedures, and material-handling equipment.
Licensing (Preferred):
Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred, or willingness to obtain one. Ability to safely operate delivery vehicles is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift heavy materials, operate forklifts and saws, and work outdoors in varying conditions.
