Position Summary

The Shelter Animal Care Technician is responsible for providing daily care to the animals housed at Ritchie County Humane Society (RCHS). This position ensures that all animals receive proper feeding, cleaning, exercise, enrichment, observation, and compassionate care while maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy shelter environment. Employees are expected to treat every animal with kindness and professionalism while supporting the mission of RCHS.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Feed and provide fresh water to all shelter animals according to established schedules and medical or dietary requirements.
  • Clean and disinfect kennels, cages, litter boxes, food and water bowls, and other animal housing areas using approved sanitation protocols.
  • Monitor the health, behavior, and overall condition of animals and promptly report concerns to supervisors.
  • Administer medications and treatments as directed by the Shelter Manager or veterinarian.
  • Exercise, socialize, and provide enrichment activities for dogs and cats to promote their physical and mental well-being.
  • Safely handle animals of varying sizes, breeds, ages, and temperaments.
  • Assist with animal intake, identification, vaccinations, and basic recordkeeping.
  • Prepare animals for adoption by maintaining cleanliness and monitoring their behavior.
  • Assist adopters and visitors in a professional, courteous manner when requested.
  • Help maintain inventory of animal food, cleaning supplies, and other shelter materials.
  • Follow all quarantine, biosecurity, and disease prevention procedures, including changing clothing or footwear when required.
  • Assist with transporting animals to veterinary appointments, rescue partners, or events as needed.
  • Participate in emergency animal care during disasters, cruelty cases, or other urgent situations.
  • Perform general housekeeping duties throughout the shelter, including but not limited to laundry, mopping, trash removal, and facility cleaning.
  • Assist with community events, fundraisers, and volunteer activities when requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Additional Administrative Responsibilities

Depending on staffing needs and operational requirements, Shelter Animal Care Technicians may also be assigned administrative and office duties. These responsibilities may include answering telephones, greeting visitors and adopters, responding to emails and social media inquiries, maintaining animal records, processing adoptions and owner surrenders, scheduling appointments, entering data into shelter software, collecting fees and donations, filing paperwork, and assisting with other clerical or customer service tasks necessary for the daily operation of the shelter.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience working with animals is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to safely handle animals of all sizes and temperaments.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Basic computer and recordkeeping skills are helpful.
  • Must demonstrate reliability, compassion, and professionalism.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently and heavier loads with assistance.
  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, and climb for extended periods.
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Safely restrain and handle animals that may be frightened, injured, or uncooperative.
  • Tolerate exposure to animal hair, dander, cleaning chemicals, odors, noise, and bodily fluids.

Pay: From $10.00 per hour
