Position Overview
The Certified Peer Support Specialist uses their lived experience with mental health, substance use, or other life challenges to provide guidance, understanding, and encouragement to others on their recovery journey. The specialist serves as a mentor, advocate, and role model — fostering hope, self-empowerment, and connection to community supports.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one peer support and group sessions to individuals receiving mental health or therapeutic services.
- Use lived experience to inspire hope, resilience, and recovery.
- Assist clients in developing self-advocacy skills and navigating community resources.
- Work collaboratively with therapists, counselors, and case managers as part of a multidisciplinary care team.
- Support individuals in setting and achieving personal goals related to wellness, employment, education, and relationships.
- Promote self-care, independence, and empowerment through strength-based support.
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical, professional standards in all interactions.
- Document client progress and participation according to program policies.
Qualifications
- Must hold current New York State Certified Peer Specialist (NYCPS) or NY Certified Peer Specialist-Provisional (NYCPS-P) credential.
- Personal lived experience
- Strong communication, empathy, and active listening skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a supportive team.
- Knowledge of local community resources and recovery supports preferred.
- Bilingual a plus (English/Spanish, English/Yiddish, etc.).
