Position Overview
The Director of Accounting is responsible for overseeing all accounting and financial operations for a growing multifamily construction and development organization. This leadership role manages financial reporting, job costing, budgeting, compliance, cash flow management, and accounting operations while partnering closely with executive leadership, project teams, and operational departments.
The ideal candidate has strong experience within construction accounting, preferably supporting multifamily, affordable housing, mixed-use, or residential development projects. This role requires a strategic and detail-oriented leader capable of improving processes, managing teams, and supporting the financial performance of complex construction operations. Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, job costing, and financial reporting.
- Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes and ensure timely and accurate reporting.
- Lead accounting support for multifamily construction, affordable housing, and residential development projects.
- Oversee project accounting functions including WIP reporting, job costing, budget tracking, and contract billing.
- Develop and maintain financial controls, accounting policies, and internal procedures.
- Collaborate with operations and project management teams to monitor project financial performance and profitability.
- Manage cash flow forecasting, banking relationships, and financial planning activities.
- Support preparation of budgets, financial forecasts, audits, and tax reporting requirements.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, contract requirements, lender reporting, and regulatory standards.
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff while supporting team development and operational efficiency.
- Partner with executive leadership on strategic planning, financial analysis, and business decision-making.
- Assist with process improvements, ERP/accounting system optimization, and reporting enhancements.
- Support ownership, investors, and development teams with financial reporting and project analysis.
Qualifications
- 8–15 years of accounting and finance experience, preferably within construction, multifamily development, or real estate industries.
- Strong experience with construction accounting, job costing, and project financial management required.
- Experience supporting multifamily, affordable housing, mixed-use, or residential construction projects strongly preferred.
- Proven leadership experience managing accounting teams and financial operations.
- Strong understanding of WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion accounting, and construction financial reporting.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial analysis.
- Knowledge of GAAP and construction accounting best practices.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Excellent communication and ability to collaborate across operations, project management, and executive teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required.
- CPA designation preferred.
- Experience with affordable housing financial structures, LIHTC projects, or multifamily development accounting is a plus.
- Proficiency with construction accounting and ERP software such as Viewpoint Vista, Sage, Timberline, Yardi, or similar platforms.
- Experience supporting organizations with both construction and development operations preferred.
