The role emphasizes dam safety, regulatory compliance, technical leadership, and collaboration with internal teams, external contractors, technical review boards, and regulatory agencies.
Roles And Responsibilities
- Coordinate geotechnical assignments with professionals and technical teams assigned to the project.
- Prepare and draft technical reports, calculation notes, and documentation for geotechnical investigations, dam safety studies, monitoring, post-construction behavior, slope stability, and consulting services.
- Perform feasibility, preliminary design, detailed studies, geotechnical design, and technical support throughout the life of the works.
- Conduct geotechnical assessments focused on dam safety, including stability analyses, seepage assessments, and foundation evaluations.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, dam safety guidelines, and best practices.
- Lead dam safety reviews and contribute to risk assessments.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and technical staff.
- Supervise contractors, engineers, and technicians related to geotechnical work.
- Interpret and analyze geotechnical data to determine engineering properties of materials and make foundation recommendations.
- Complete geotechnical engineering analyses, including seepage, slope stability, bearing capacity, settlement, and rotational stiffness assessments.
- Collaborate and interact with independent technical review boards, state agencies, and project partners.
- Facilitate and participate in failure modes and effects analyses (FMEAs) and potential failure modes analyses (PFMAs).
- Perform probability and consequence analyses for qualitative risk assessments.
- Willingness to travel as needed to support project requirements and conduct site visits.
- Complete other related tasks required for project success.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, with specialization in Geotechnical Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or eligibility.
- Minimum of 15 years’ relevant experience with dam safety evaluations, geotechnical risk assessments, and foundation analysis for hydraulic structures.
- Leadership experience in technical management or subject matter expert roles, including mentoring and guiding teams.
- Strong knowledge of civil engineering and design codes, standards, guidelines, and best practices related to dam evaluation, design, and construction.
- Experience with established dam safety programs such as Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Part 12, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Land Management, or FEMA.
- Facilitation experience with PFMAs and FMEAs.
- Experience performing probability and consequence analysis for qualitative risk assessments.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheet creation.
- Willingness to travel to visit contractors and conduct site visits, especially during construction.
- Current authorization to work in the United States.
- Successful completion of background clearance, physical, and drug screening requirements.
- Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering.
- 20 years of relevant experience.
- Experience in tailings and water dam safety assessments and regulatory compliance.
- Strong technical report writing skills.
- Proficiency in GeoStudio software, Microsoft Office suite, and risk analysis software (@Risk or similar).
- Valid driver’s license.
- Good knowledge of spoken and written English.
