Position Summary

The Student Council Advisor is responsible for initiating, organizing, and supervising student government activities, fostering leadership skills, promoting school spirit, and encouraging civic responsibility among students. The Advisor works with student leaders, staff, and the school community to plan and coordinate events, service projects, and activities that enhance the student experience. To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to fulfill each essential duty effectively and in accordance with district policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership & Program Management

  • Initiate, organize, and oversee all Student Council/student government activities.

  • Hold a minimum of one monthly meeting with the Student Council.

  • Develop and submit an annual Student Council calendar at the beginning of the year, including all relevant dates, events, and activities.

  • Communicate important dates and program updates to students, parents, and staff.

  • Enter all meetings, events, and activities into the district’s building use software (FMX).

Student Engagement & School Spirit

  • Support student leadership development through mentoring, guidance, and training.

  • Coordinate elections, meetings, and projects in accordance with school and district guidelines.

  • Promote school pride, service, and community involvement through organized events and initiatives.

  • Serve as a liaison between students, faculty, and administration.

Budget & Fund Management

  • Manage the Student Council budget and maintain accurate financial records.

  • Collect and deposit funds in accordance with Board of Education policy.

  • Ensure all expenditures align with district purchasing and financial guidelines.

Recruitment & Promotion

  • Coordinate Student Council marketing and recruitment efforts.

  • Encourage student participation across all grade levels to promote diverse representation.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise students in small and large group settings.

  • May oversee parents and volunteers during Student Council activities and school-sponsored events. 

Skills and Abilities

Language Skills

  • Ability to read, write, and interpret documents, instructions, and correspondence accurately.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively engage students, parents, staff, and community members.

Mathematics Skills

  • Proficiency in performing mathematical operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

  • Ability to calculate rates, ratios, and percentages, and interpret data for budget management and event planning.

Reasoning Ability

  • Apply practical knowledge and sound judgment in problem-solving and decision-making.

  • Effectively follow oral and written instructions.

Other Skills and Abilities

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and community members.

  • Demonstrate understanding of district policies, Board of Education requirements, and administrative guidelines.

Physical Demands

  • Frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and listen.

  • Occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

  • May lift or move objects up to 50 pounds.

  • Vision requirements include close, distance, and peripheral vision.

  • CCompensation is in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between Richmond Community Schools and MEA-Local 1/Richmond Education Association (REA).
