Job Title: Lead Speech-Language Pathologist
Grade Level/Terms of Employment: Certified Teacher’s Salary, 12 month contract

5% Lead Stipend
FLSA Status: Exempt
Work Location: Exceptional Education
Immediate Supervisor: Senior Speech-Language Pathologist

 

General Description:
The Lead Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) holds a CCC-SLP issued by the American Speech-Language
and Hearing Association, and a valid Speech-Language Pathology license issued by the Virginia Board of
Audiology, Speech-Language Pathology. The Lead SLP serves the division as a member of school-based
teams, and maintains a caseload of students who require speech and language services. In addition, the
Lead Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) supports the Exceptional Education Department by providing
leadership to a designated group of Speech-Language Pathologist (SLPs) to ensure that a high quality of
services are rendered, as the scope of practice includes evaluations and service delivery options that are
in keeping with the guidelines established for Speech-Language Pathology services in Virginia Public
Schools.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participates as a member of the Child Find team and the school-based eligibility/IEP teams
  • Conducts evaluations using an appropriate mix of formal and informal diagnostic measures and

performs quality data analysis to diagnose specific speech-language impairments with students

across grade levels exhibiting the full range of communication disorders, including those involving

language, articulation (speech sound disorders), fluency, voice/resonance, and swallowing

  • Develops an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) for identified students and provides

appropriate programs of therapy to meet individual needs

  • Ensures that students receive quality culturally sensitive evaluations and services, with an

understanding of and appreciation for the diversity in our schools

  • Participates in the planning and development of division and department-level training

opportunities and meetings; serves on panels for increasing awareness and understanding of

Speech-Language Pathology

  • Maintains accurate and complete documentation of student services and reports student progress

in a timely manner as required by law, School Board policies and RPS administrative regulations and

procedures; mentors a group of Speech-Language Pathologists to ensure timely documentation

  • Serves as liaison between home, school and community in matters relating to speech-language

development and works closely with the division's audiologist and nursing team to plan hearing

screenings to determine students’ hearing acuity

  • Engages appropriate community agencies and/or community based Speech-Language Pathology

service providers in collaborative arrangements to address student needs

  • Demonstrates evidence-based practices in keeping with the latest research and current trends by

participating in professional organizations and memberships, continuing education and professional

 

development opportunities, and reviews and shares the literature with peers and colleagues as

released in both written and electronic publications

  • Demonstrates best practices, and provides consultation, education and training as needed to

teachers, parents and school staff on topics related to service delivery for students with

communication impairments

  • Adheres to ethical standards and codes of the profession and to the established rules, regulations

and laws governing Special Education programs

  • Supports the Senior Speech-Language Pathologist with:

o Managing a designated cohort of Speech-Language Pathologists to provide monitoring of

service delivery their adherence to established ASHA and VDOE guidelines for best practice

o Clinical Fellowship Year- (CFY) Supervision (for new graduates who are in first work

experience- CF supervision is required by American Speech-Language and Hearing

Association (ASHA);

o Serving on the interview panel for candidates interested in SLP positions with RPS.

o Assist with coordinating Preschool, Kindergarten, grades 3, 7 and 10 mandated hearing

screenings; collaboration with nursing services and audiologist

o Demonstrate skill with VA IEP Online (Administrative Access) for troubleshooting, adding

and removing students to/from Speech Language Pathologists’ caseloads; monitoring

caseload sizes for equitable distribution of students

o Maintaining inventory, ordering, review and distribution of diagnostic/therapy materials

o Planning and monitoring “Speech Language Pathologists Orientation Series”, and timely

documentation of data related to VPI/Headstart, IEP, and ISP and ESY services ·

o Attend weekly check-in meetings with Sr. Speech-Language Pathologist to maintain

awareness of tasks required for supporting broad scope of departmental needs

o Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree or greater in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited institution, and a

current license to practice Speech-Language Pathology issued by the Virginia Board of

Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology

  • Ability to communicate and work in a collaborative manner with diverse groups in schools and

the community (i.e. administrators, teachers, parents and other partners to the division)

  • Knowledgeable about the communication sciences (acoustics; physiological processes of speech,

language and hearing and swallowing)

  • Understanding of current trends related to the processes of evaluation, instruction and service

delivery including organization and administration of a public school speech/language pathology

program, to include the planning for and provision of in person face-to-face as well as virtual

services for persons with speech-language disorders

  • Ability to manage time, prioritize duties, work independently, and demonstrate excellent

organizational, oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to manage Speech-Language Pathology caseload/workload while carrying out the duties

of the Lead Speech-Language Pathologist
