We are currently looking for an Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist to join our dynamic, fast-paced, and growing team. This role focuses on safety within a welding, steel fabrication, and heavy industrial metalworking environment and is accountable for implementing and sustaining EHS programs. The EHS Specialist is responsible for oversight of safety for our second shift, with occasional coverage on first shift as business needs dictate.
The position is accountable for supporting all safety activities across our fabrication and production operations, including monitoring safety objectives and targets, internal reporting of the Safety department performance, and ensuring our safety programs, policies, and procedures are implemented and sustained. The EHS Specialist will also ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory requirements and support a strong safety culture that engages all employees working in welding, fabrication, machining, and heavy steel production environments.
The EHS Specialist role requires flexibility in working hours including nights, weekends, and overtime as business needs dictate.

What You Will Be Doing
- Interact with welders, fitters, fabricators, and production team members on the shop floor to identify hazards related to welding, cutting, grinding, rigging, and steel fabrication activities.
- Assist with corrective actions, mentor employees on safe work practices, and foster a positive relationship that encourages a best-in-class safety culture in a heavy manufacturing environment.
- Support and conduct safety & health inspections focused on welding operations, hot work, confined space entry, crane operations, material handling, and fabrication processes.
- Apply the Company’s incident/accident prevention program. Investigate all incidents/accidents, identify root causes, and ensure corrective actions are implemented according to regulatory and site EHS requirements.
- Support injury abatement programs through the development and tracking of leading and lagging indicators specific to fabrication and welding operations.
- Conduct safety training including classroom and on-the-job training (OJT) for employees and subcontractors performing welding, cutting, grinding, and steel fabrication work.
- Review new fabrication processes, welding procedures, equipment installations, and production layouts to ensure proper safety and industrial hygiene controls are incorporated.
- Monitor and support compliance related to welding fumes, ventilation systems, respiratory protection, noise exposure, and other industrial hygiene concerns common to metal fabrication environments.
- Verify and maintain all OSHA and regulatory documentation including hot work permits, confined space entry permits, equipment inspections, training records, and incident reports.
- Interpret OSHA 1910, 1915, and 1926 standards with emphasis on welding, fabrication, material handling, and industrial manufacturing safety requirements.
- Serve as a member of the Safety Committee and provide recommendations specific to fabrication shop safety improvements.
- Partner with supervisors to enhance safety culture across welding bays, fabrication areas, and production departments.
- Plan and oversee safety measures to minimize exposure to hazards such as welding fumes, sparks, heavy plate handling, energized equipment, and mobile equipment.
- Champion projects designed to improve safety performance within operations.
- Administrative responsibilities including managing spreadsheets, drafting documents, preparing reports, and developing training materials.
- Additional duties as assigned.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety or related field preferred
- 5 years of EHS experience in welding, steel fabrication, metal manufacturing, shipbuilding, or heavy industrial environments strongly preferred
- Experience supporting safety programs for welding, cutting, grinding, and heavy fabrication operations
- Knowledge of hot work permitting, lockout/tagout, confined space entry, and crane/rigging safety
- Understanding of industrial hygiene hazards including welding fumes, silica, noise, and ventilation requirements
- Due to the sensitivity of this role and associated federal requirements, candidates must be U.S. Citizens (non-dual citizenship) and able to obtain and maintain U.S. Navy badging credentials as a condition of employment
- Valid driver’s license meeting insurance eligibility standards
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety and Health Certification required
- First Aid/CPR/AED certification (or ability to obtain); EMT preferred
- Demonstrated experience conducting safety audits in fabrication or manufacturing settings
- Ability to influence craft personnel including welders, fitters, and production supervisors
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Experience reviewing Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and Site-Specific Safety Plans (SSSPs) for fabrication work
- Ability to evaluate Project Work Plans for fabrication and welding safety risks
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
The performance of this position involves exposure to heavy industrial fabrication areas where the use of PPE including hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, welding PPE, and steel-toed boots is required.
- Work will be performed in active welding and fabrication shops with exposure to sparks, noise, fumes, moving equipment, and heavy material handling operations.
- Must be able to work in a variety of physical conditions including sitting, standing, walking, and driving. May require walking and standing on uneven surfaces, climbing ladders and ship stairways, working at heights, and entering confined spaces.
