What are the responsibilities and job description for the Technical Accounting Consultant position at RGP?
RGP seeking an experienced Technical Accounting Manager to serve in an Interim Senior Manager capacity for a large, regulated utilities organization. This role will act as a player-coach, providing hands-on technical accounting leadership while overseeing SOX governance activities. The position reports to a Principal Manager who is new to the organization, and will supervise a well-tenured, high-performing team.
The ideal candidate brings deep utility industry experience, strong technical accounting judgment, and the confidence to make and defend accounting conclusions in a regulated, public-company environment.
Technical Accounting (~70%)
- Lead technical accounting assessments and conclusions for complex accounting matters in a regulated utility environment.
- Research, interpret, and apply U.S. GAAP and industry-specific guidance; prepare and review technical accounting memos.
- Provide guidance on accounting treatments, estimates, and judgments, ensuring alignment with regulatory and audit expectations.
- Serve as a key technical accounting decision-maker and advisor to finance leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Review work products prepared by the technical accounting team and provide coaching and quality oversight.
- Oversee SOX governance activities in partnership with SOX Advisors on the team.
- Ensure key controls are designed and operating effectively in accordance with SOX requirements.
- Review SOX documentation, risk assessments, and remediation plans as needed.
- Act as a liaison with Internal Audit and external auditors on SOX-related matters.

- Provide clear direction, coaching, and decision-making support to a tenured team with strong performance history
- Support and partner closely with the Principal Manager, providing continuity, subject-matter expertise, and institutional knowledge.
- Communicate complex accounting matters clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
What you will bring
- Prior experience in the utilities industry (electric, gas, water, or regulated energy).
- 8–12 years of progressive experience in technical accounting, including leadership or manager-level roles.
- Strong working knowledge of U.S. GAAP, technical accounting research, and accounting policy development.
- Experience operating in a SOX-compliant, public company environment.
- Proven ability to act as a player-coach—hands-on while leading and developing others.
- Strong professional judgment and ability to make and stand behind accounting decisions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Variety of workplace arrangements including hybrid, remote, onsite.
- Compensation commensurate with employee qualifications, experience, and other factors including geographic location, market, and operational factors.
- Pay Range: $85hr.
