What are the responsibilities and job description for the Intern - Turf/Golf Course Maintenance position at Reynolds Lake Oconee?
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with daily golf course maintenance, including mowing greens, tees, fairways, and roughs.
- Participate in irrigation management, including troubleshooting, repair, and monitoring of systems.
- Help with the application of fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, and other plant protectants, while following safety protocols and environmental regulations.
- Assist with aeration, topdressing, overseeding, and other agronomic practices to maintain healthy turfgrass.
- Learn to operate and maintain various types of equipment such as mowers, aerators, and utility vehicles.
- Perform regular bunker maintenance, including raking and shaping.
- Assist in maintaining flower beds, trees, shrubs, and other landscape areas around the golf course.
- Monitor turf health and report any signs of pests, disease, or stress to the agronomy team.
- Participate in course setup for tournaments and special events, ensuring that all playing surfaces meet the required standards.
- Work with the Superintendent to understand soil, water, and turfgrass science.
- Keep accurate records of daily tasks, including fertilizer applications, pesticide usage, and irrigation schedules.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including equipment storage areas and maintenance shop.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed a degree program in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field.
- Basic knowledge of turf management and golf course maintenance practices is a plus but not required.
- Strong interest in pursuing a career in golf course maintenance or sports turf management.
- Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail and a positive attitude toward learning.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment or materials (up to 50 lbs.).
- A valid driver’s license is preferred.
