Senior Mainframe Storage Architect

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Enterprise Architect to support enterprise IBM z/OS storage infrastructure across multiple data center environments. This position combines deep technical expertise in mainframe storage administration, architecture, configuration, capacity management, troubleshooting, disaster recovery, and operational support.
The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience administering IBM z/OS storage environments, including SMS, HSM/DFSMShsm, RMM, DASD, ACS routines, and storage groups, along with exposure to technologies such as Dell EMC PowerMax, Luminex Mainframe Virtual Tape, zEDC, Dino Software T-REX/UDM, and IBM TDMF.
The role will support approximately 20 LPARs across three storage environments/data centers and will work closely with internal infrastructure teams and technology vendors to maintain highly available, reliable, and efficient storage services.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide senior-level administration and technical guidance for IBM z/OS enterprise storage environments.
- Configure, administer, monitor, and optimize SMS storage groups, storage pools, HSM/DFSMShsm, and RMM.
- Develop, maintain, test, translate, validate, and activate SMS ACS routines using ISMF.
- Define and maintain appropriate SMS constructs within the z/OS storage environment.
- Initialize, configure, and maintain DASD devices.
- Perform DFSMSdss full-volume and logical dataset dump and restore activities.
- Monitor storage utilization, capacity, system health, and alerts and proactively address potential issues.
- Develop and maintain storage management and utilization reporting.
- Provide break/fix troubleshooting and root-cause support for storage-related incidents.
- Support Dell EMC PowerMax storage and SRDF replication where applicable.
- Support virtual tape infrastructure, including Luminex Mainframe Virtual Tape (MVT), storage pools, LSCRUP processes, and Luminex GUI.
- Support and optimize zEDC (zEnterprise Data Compression) capabilities.
- Work with Dino Software T-REX and UDM products within the mainframe storage environment.
- Participate in storage migrations and related activities using technologies such as IBM TDMF for z/OS.
- Coordinate closely with technology vendors for installations, upgrades, troubleshooting, and ongoing product support.
- Assist vendor-led installations and perform product upgrades as required.
- Participate in on-call support, system monitoring, and response to production alerts.
- Participate in scheduled disaster recovery exercises and support storage recovery preparedness.
- Use ServiceNow for incident, problem, request, and change-management activities.
- Follow established change, incident, and problem management processes, including required change-ticket documentation and advance work planning.
- Provide architectural and strategic guidance related to storage infrastructure while remaining capable of performing hands-on storage administration and troubleshooting.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required. No substitution for the degree requirement.
- 11 years of related IT experience.
- 4 years of experience in corporate planning or strategic development, which may be concurrent with overall IT experience.
- Extensive hands-on experience with IBM z/OS storage administration.
- Strong experience with:
- IBM z/OS storage environments
- SMS / System Managed Storage
- SMS ACS routines
- ISMF
- HSM/DFSMShsm configuration and administration
- RMM configuration and administration
- SMS storage groups and utilization monitoring
- DASD initialization and configuration
- DFSMSdss dump and restore
- Storage capacity/utilization reporting
- Experience supporting production environments through monitoring, alert response, troubleshooting, change management, and on-call support.
- Ability to work effectively with infrastructure teams, vendors, and other technical stakeholders.
- Experience working within formal incident, problem, and change-management processes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree.
- Working knowledge of Dell EMC PowerMax and SRDF replication.
- Experience with Luminex Mainframe Virtual Tape (MVT), including storage pools, LSCRUP processes, and Luminex GUI.
- Experience with Dino Software T-REX and UDM.
- Experience with IBM TDMF for z/OS.
- Experience implementing or supporting zEDC.
- Experience supporting complex, multi-data-center mainframe storage environments.
- Experience participating in disaster recovery testing and exercises.
- Experience partnering directly with storage technology vendors on installations, upgrades, and production support.
Environment
The position supports a large-scale enterprise mainframe storage infrastructure spanning three storage environments/data centers, including environments in Ashburn and Kent, with approximately 20 LPARs.
The successful candidate will be expected to combine the strategic and architectural perspective of a senior technical resource with the hands-on storage administration expertise necessary to troubleshoot, configure, optimize, and support a critical production environment.
