Position Overview:
The Lead MV Service Technician at Rethink Electric is responsible for overseeing the maintenance and repair of the company’s portfolio of solar assets to ensure optimal production and efficiency. This role involves providing mentorship to service technicians and electricians, ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations, and coordinating preventive and corrective maintenance activities. The Lead MV Service Technician will collaborate with various internal and external stakeholders to guarantee the smooth operation and high performance of all systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership and Mentorship: Provide on-site leadership and guidance to Service Technicians and Apprentices, ensuring all maintenance and repair activities adhere to industry standards, safety regulations, and company policies. Research and implement best practices for preventive and corrective maintenance to enhance system performance. Collaborate with utilities, facility personnel, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure the best service outcomes for Rethink Electric’s portfolio.
- Technical Expertise: Troubleshoot and resolve issues across MV electrical systems, DC electrical systems, inverters, AC components, and communications/Data Acquisition Systems (DAS), ensuring optimal system performance.
- Testing and Commissioning: Perform and/or oversee transformer acceptance testing (TTR, insulation resistance, winding resistance, power factor), MV cable testing (VLF), and relay testing (protection relay settings loading, functional testing, SCADA point-to-point testing, verification of protective device coordination). Support energization, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities while working with utilities and third parties.
- Maintenance and Repairs: Perform both preventive and corrective maintenance on photovoltaic (PV) systems, addressing electrical and mechanical issues that impact production. Lead the yearly transformer oil sampling & testing program. Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies while conducting maintenance. Review key project documentation to effectively manage the solar asset portfolio.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs in the work order management system. Submit detailed reports on system performance and activities, providing sufficient information on tasks completed and follow-up actions required. Keep inventory levels up to date by tracking spares and parts used during maintenance.
- RMA Process Administration: Administer the Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) process for defective or damaged components by liaising with the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Ensure the timely and accurate submission of RMA requests and collaborate with the Asset Management team to track and manage all ongoing RMA claims.
Qualifications:
- 5 years of experience in commercial solar, including commissioning and maintaining solar PV systems.
- Proven electrical troubleshooting skills, with expertise in MV electrical systems, DC electrical systems, inverters, and AC components.
- Strong knowledge of industry standards and safety regulations for solar energy systems.
- Excellent leadership and mentorship skills with the ability to guide a team of Service Technicians and Apprentices.
- Strong organizational and reporting abilities, with experience in work order management systems.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of collaborating effectively with various stakeholders, including clients, utilities, and service providers.
- Experience managing the RMA process and handling OEM communications for defective components.

The salary range for this role reflects the broad array of factors considered in making compensation decisions. These factors include, but are not limited to, skill sets, experience, training, licensure, and certifications, as well as other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the geographic differential associated with the location where the position may be filled. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $100K-$150K. At SunVest, it is uncommon for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role, as compensation decisions are tailored to the specifics of each case.
