In support of our client, a heavy industrial manufacturer, we are seeking a Senior Automation (I&C) Engineer to join their corporate engineering team near Terre Haute, IN. This is a long-term contract opportunity with an expected duration of 6-12 months with the possibility of extension or full time employment.
The Senior Automation (I&C) Engineer provides enterprise-level technical leadership for instrumentation, process control, and automation systems across multiple chemical manufacturing sites. This role establishes corporate standards, leads capital projects, and supports safe, reliable, and compliant operation of control systems in hazardous process environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design, standardization, and lifecycle management of instrumentation, control systems (DCS/PLC/SCADA), and analytical equipment across sites.
- Design DCS, PLC, and SCADA architectures with appropriate redundancy, segregation, and high-availability strategies.
- Support batch control strategies in accordance with ISA-88, including recipe management and phase logic.
- Design, validate, and maintain Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) in accordance with IEC 61511/61508 and company process safety standards.
- Participate in and support HAZOP, LOPA, PHA revalidation, and SIL determination activities.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards including OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, NFPA, API, IEC, ISA, and local authority requirements.
- Implement and maintain alarm management programs in accordance with ISA-18.2 and EEMUA 191.
- Improve unit reliability and availability through diagnostics, preventive maintenance strategies, and control system lifecycle management.
- Serve as the corporate technical authority for Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), ensuring compliance with IEC standards and supporting HAZOP, LOPA, and PHA activities.
- Oversee I&C scope for capital projects, including design, FAT/SAT, commissioning, and startup, while providing guidance to EPCs and system integrators.
- Drive reliability and performance improvements through troubleshooting, root cause analysis, alarm management, and control strategy optimization.
- Support corporate governance by developing engineering standards, leading MOC processes, and ensuring documentation, cybersecurity, and regulatory compliance.
- Act as a subject matter expert and mentor, collaborating across process safety, operations, and IT/OT teams to promote best practices and consistency.
- Corporate role supporting multiple manufacturing sites, with approximately 30–40% travel.
- Regular travel to domestic and international manufacturing sites to support projects, audits, and troubleshooting.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Chemical, Electrical, Controls, or related field).
- 8–12 years of I&C experience in chemical or petrochemical manufacturing environments.
- Strong expertise with DCS platforms (e.g., DeltaV, Honeywell, Siemens) and process control strategies.
- Strong working knowledge of chemical unit operations, continuous and batch processing, and process control strategies.
- Proven ability to lead projects and interface effectively with operations, maintenance, and process engineering teams.
- Experience supporting PSM-regulated processes and leading projects across cross-functional teams.
Preferred
- PE license or Functional Safety certification.
- Experience with APC, batch systems (ISA-88), MES (ISA-95), and OT cybersecurity.
