- Operates press efficiently to try to achieve the highest quality and profitability possible.
- Reads and understands instructions from job ticket and spec sheets.
- Makes ready job including the mounting of plates, installing of all necessary tooling, mixing of any needed inks, matching PMS, and custom colors, setting all tensions, impressions and registering of plates.
- Makes final inspection of set up and submits copy for final quality control sign off. Converts order as quickly as possible, never sacrificing quality for speed.
- Constantly monitors quality of work while press is running and makes needed adjustments.
- Performs post printing duties i.e., cleaning of printing plates, ink fountains, anilox rollers, along with base and impression rollers.
- Performs all needed preventive maintenance requirements.
- Wears all needed and required safety equipment and becomes familiar with MSDS information regarding chemicals.
- Ensures personal knowledge of and adherence to all applicable ISO procedures pertaining to his/her job.
- Completes order requisitions for needed supplies.
- Keeps machine and work area neat and orderly.
- Assists in other areas of production when workload permits.
- Cross trains on other presses and equipment when time allows.
- Performs duties as requested by supervisor.
- Minimum 3 years of printing press operation experience and a strong background in the fundamentals of flexography.
- Offset printing experience required (Gallus experience strongly preferred)
- Experience with high-quality label production preferred
- Demonstrated ability to maintain color consistency, registration, and overall print quality
- Must be able to apply written and verbal instructions to machine set-up.
- Must demonstrate reliability.
- Thorough knowledge of problem-solving issues at press level.
- Must have a sense of urgency and be capable of dealing with deadlines.
- Must be able to lift and carry dies ranging in weight from about 2 pounds to about 120 pounds. This function may occur as many as 5 times per shift. When lifting heavy dies, special equipment is available.
- Must be able to lift and carry print cylinders ranging in weight from a few ounces to 25 times per shift.
- Must be able to lift and carry 5-gallon pails of ink, which weigh approximately 45 pounds. Pails may have to be lifted waist high tilted and contents poured into smaller containers such as one-gallon jugs. This function may occur as many as 6 times per shift.
- Must be able to carry ink pans from the press to cleaning sink. Pans must be washed and then returned to the press. Ink pans can weigh from 1 1/2 pounds to 4 pounds each. This function may occur as many as 16 times per shift.
- Must be able to bend or squat and pick up rolls of material to waist height that are up to 16 inches wide by as much as 6,000 feet in length. Rolls can weigh as much as 150 pounds each. This function may occur as many as 20 times per shift. When lifting large rolls of material, assistance is mandatory.
- Must be able to bend or squat to clean press or equipment when necessary. This may have to be done several times throughout the shift for a period of several minutes at a time.
- Must be able to lift and carry waste rolls of material, which may weigh up to 50 pounds. Must be able to lift and carry waste rolls of matrix, which may weigh up to 25 pounds each. Rolls may need to be carried to the dumpster, lifted waist high and thrown into the canister. This function may have to be done as many as 15 times per shift.
- Must be able to lift trashcans at your workstation, which could weigh as much as 50 pounds. Trashcans must be lifted 7 to 8 inches high to be placed on a pallet jack or two- wheeler and then taken to the dumpster. Trashcans will then have to be lifted over waist high to be emptied into the dumpster. This function may have to be done as many as 4 times per shift.
- Must be able to lift full boxes onto a skid. This function may have to be done as many as 50 times per shift.
- Must be able to stand and walk back and forth for long periods of time while operating a press or other piece of equipment. At times you will be required to stand for periods in excess of 2 hours.
