Job Title Laboratory Technician
Department Geological Services
Reports To Principal Geologist and Manager, Geological Services

Part Time Non-Exempt Salaried
Job Purpose
The Laboratory Technician is responsible for maintaining the laboratory area and for preparing, labeling,
packing, shipping and tracking samples, providing sample status to the rest of the team and organizing
sample data. The laboratory technician also advises on chemical characterization of waste products,
assists in recommending lab pack containers, and liaises with waste disposal sites as required.
Essential Functions
Maintain the Laboratory Area
- Keep the laboratory area clean and organized
- Maintain and track inventory of laboratory items e.g. bottles.
- Laboratory contact for sampling questions, bottle ware questions, etc.
Sample Preparation and Shipping
- Schedule FEDEX and lab courier pick ups
2 • Create and print all necessary documents e.g. shipping labels, chains of custody, sample
labels.
- Prepare samples for shipping and pack samples.
- Co-ordination of large sampling events, bottle orders and courier.
3 Sample Tracking
- Use Excel to input sample information for sample tracking and report tracking purposes.
- Correspond with the field team on sample status
- Check schedule and correspond with lab on sample status
Sample Data
4 • Saving sorting and quality control of sample data
- Provide analytical data to clients as required.
Manage Laboratory Waste
5 • Authority to decide whether to discard a sample
- Co-ordinate with Resource Waste department on disposal.
Chemical characterization
- Provide advice on the characterization of waste materials
- Recommend appropriate containers for lab packing
- Liase with waste disposal facilities as required
General Clerical Duties

- Provide information to accounts on orders and billing.
Job Specification Requirements
Education B.S. in Chemistry or similar scientific discipline
Certifications
Experience Experience working as a laboratory assistant would be an advantage Familiarity with DOT and EPA regulations would be an advantage.
