What are the responsibilities and job description for the Chief Mate position at Resolve Marine?
Position Responsibilities:
Chief Mate – is directly responsible to the Master.
Stands bridge watches to the requirements of the master's Standing Orders, the Safety Management System, the STCW and the Collision Regulations
Keeps the ship's navigational outfit including charts and nautical publications fully corrected
Performs safe navigation and piloting
Manages Bridge administration/paperwork
Protection of the environment, cargo, and property
Performs necessary routine maintenance, repairs, and handles ship's business under the direction of the Master
Prepares for trip, load cargo and ship's shores
Stands watch while vessel is underway as required to reach destination safely and expeditiously
Supervises disposal and removal of waste material
Ensures the good condition and maintenance of all safety appliances and fittings throughout the ship
Arranges safety exercises and drills and ensures they are conducted seriously and beneficially by the entire ship's company on a regular basis to the management's requirement
Performs all basic and deck department familiarization training and arranges the crew emergency demonstrations and exercises
Manages the ship's environmental programs – including the GARBAGE MANAGEMENT PLAN and the BALLAST WATER MANAGEMENT PLAN, Form VOY 4 – Ballast Water Management Plan
Assists the Master for the sound arrangements of all safety and other crew committee meetings
Deputizes as the Master whenever the Master is unable to attend to his responsibilities
Ensures the effectiveness of shipboard discipline and the Safety Management System
Performs stability and hull stress control
Supervises the work of the Deck Department and directs the deck crew about deck maintenance and upkeep of deck machinery and equipment
Checks the condition and maintenance of mooring ropes and wires, all other lines cordage, running gear and lifting wires and ropes
Checks the maintenance of steelwork and paintwork etc. on open decks and ship's sides
Checks the adequate supply of paint and deck stores
Maintains the sounding records of fresh water and ballast water tanks
Supervises gangway routines
Verifies escape routes are kept clear and well signed
Ensures the cleanliness and tidiness of the ship's decks, accommodation alleyways, galley and cabins
Other duties as assigned
Position Requirements:
Must have MMC with USCG endorsement of Chief Mate of Towing Motor propelled vessels unlimited, 1,600(GRT) upon Oceans
Must be a U.S. Citizen with a current and active US passport
Must have a current USCG License for Chief Mate with required STCW endorsements
Must meet the applicable statutory guidelines regarding credentials and eligibility to work criteria
Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
Valid USCG STCW and National medicals
Minimum of 3 years' experience as a Chief Mate
Well versed with USCG/ABS/ISM/ISPS regulatory requirements as applicable to ocean-going tugs
Possess strong written and oral communication skills
Must be a team player & leader with a positive attitude who takes pride in their work
Has demonstrated the ability to cooperate and communicate well with coworkers, supervisors, and subordinates
Has strong attention to detail and is always performance and results driven to maintain vessels in full readiness for any emergency response requirement
Be reliable and demonstrate good judgment and decision-making skills
Ability to work in tight or close quarter environments
Applicants to meet the physical demands while performing the tasks required for transferring rigging, laying rigging, handling lines, moving and operating portable pumps, routine housekeeping duties, general maintenance, and assisting in the navigation of the boat. These duties will be performed during all types of weather, night and day, and while the vessel is underway
Incumbents are required to use hand tools, power tools, painting equipment, and personal protective gear
Incumbents are frequently required to move equipment that is heavy or awkward and must meet a 100 lb. lifting requirement
Must follow all safety protocols and adhere to regulations and company policies
All Prospective Employees Must Submit to A Drug Test and Background Check
This position is subject to random drug and alcohol testing as part of the US Coast Guard and other compliance agency requirements
