Queens College is seeking responsible and attentive Lifeguards to oversee pool activities in a collegiate aquatics environment. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safety of all patrons during facility rentals, free hour swim, and other scheduled aquatic programs. The Lifeguard will maintain constant surveillance of the pool area, enforce all safety rules and facility policies, and respond promptly and effectively to emergencies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Lifeguard will oversee daily pool operations during assigned shifts, including monitoring swimmers, supervising rental groups, and supporting free swim periods for students and community members. This role requires maintaining a professional presence on deck, proactively identifying potential hazards, and ensuring that all participants follow established safety guidelines. The Lifeguard will assist with opening and closing procedures, maintain cleanliness and organization of the pool deck and equipment areas, and communicate clearly with supervisors, event coordinators, and facility staff to ensure smooth operations during rentals and special events.
Core Competencies / Qualifications
High school diploma. One year college experience.
Candidates must hold current Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, and First Aid certifications. The ideal applicant demonstrates strong observational skills, sound judgment, and the ability to remain calm and decisive in emergency situations. Prior experience working in a collegiate, municipal, or high-traffic aquatic facility is preferred. Applicants must be dependable, punctual, and capable of working evenings and weekends as required by the rental and programming schedule.
This position requires the ability to sit or stand for extended periods, maintain focused attention, and respond quickly in emergency situations. Lifeguards represent the department and are expected to provide courteous and professional customer service to all patrons.
