Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Compressor Mechanic with expertise in Caterpillar (CAT) engines and natural gas compressors to join our team in the Greater Fort Worth area. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and optimization of compression equipment supporting upstream and midstream oil and gas operations. This role requires hands-on technical skills, a strong focus on safety, and the ability to work in field environments to ensure minimal downtime and maximum operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on CAT engines (e.g., G3300, G3500, G3600 series) and associated compressors, including Ariel, Dresser-Rand, or similar models used in oil and gas applications.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in compression systems, identifying root causes and implementing effective repairs.
- Conduct overhauls, rebuilds, and upgrades on engines and compressors to meet industry standards and client specifications.
- Inspect equipment for compliance with safety regulations, environmental guidelines, and OEM recommendations, including emissions testing and vibration analysis.
- Collaborate with operations teams to optimize compressor performance, reduce fuel consumption, and enhance reliability in high-pressure gas gathering and boosting operations.
- Respond to emergency breakdowns and provide on-call support in the Fort Worth basin and nearby shale plays.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, parts inventory, and service reports using digital tools and CMMS software.
- Assist in training junior mechanics and ensuring team adherence to lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and other safety protocols.
- Travel to remote field sites as needed, with potential for overtime during peak operational periods.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or associate degree in diesel mechanics, heavy equipment repair, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Compressor Mechanic in the oil and gas industry, with proven expertise in CAT engines and reciprocating/rotary screw compressors.
- Caterpillar-certified technician (e.g., CAT Gas Engine or Power Systems certification) highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of oil and gas compression processes, including gas flow dynamics, pressure control, and instrumentation.
- Familiarity with tools and diagnostic equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, borescopes, and CAT ET (Electronic Technician) software.
- Valid driver's license and ability to pass a background check, drug screening, and DOT physical.
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and lift up to 50 lbs.
Required Skills
- Proficient in mechanical troubleshooting and repair of high-horsepower engines and compression units.
- Understanding of PLC systems, control panels, and automation in gas compression.
- Commitment to safety practices, including OSHA and API standards relevant to the oil and gas sector.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills for coordinating with field supervisors, engineers, and vendors.
- Basic computer literacy for logging work orders and accessing technical manuals.
