Position Overview
Free the Slaves is seeking a dedicated and experienced Accounts Officer to ensure the effective financial management of the organization. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, processing transactions, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with internal policies and donor requirements. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting, attention to detail, and experience working in the nonprofit sector. The Accounts Officer will work closely with the program teams and the Finance Consultant to ensure budgeting, financial planning, and audits. This position reports to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities
The Accounts Officer will:
Accounting
- Accounts payable, invoices, credit card activity, review, code, and enter in Financial Accounting Software
- Accounts receivable, including processing contributions, producing statements of accounts, and account reconciliation as needed.
- Process employee expense reports
- Ensure accounts are up to date, and ensure monthly & timely financial statements
- Processing ACH payments and national and international wire transfers
- Credit card reconciliation
- Lead the annual budgeting process and ensure budget implementation
- Invoice creation and distribution as needed
- Develop and maintain a system of cash flow forecasting
- Process payroll as needed
- Support the audit and lead the engagement with auditors
- Manage bank relations and engagement
- Guide staff on finance & accounting as needed
- Manage existing payment systems, including PayPal and Stripe
- Ensure implementation of staff benefits: health insurance, life insurance, etc.
- Working with the development team, supporting state registrations
- Work with the team to ensure operational and accounting systems and software are working effectively
- Manage the relationship with vendors
The Accounts Officer Will
- Report to the Executive Director.
- Collaborate with the Finance Consultant
- Work closely with the Programs-Operations-Budget Liaison
- Collaborate with other members of the team as needed.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. A professional certification (e.g., CPA, ACCA) is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of relevant accounting or finance experience, preferably within the nonprofit/NGO sector.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks) and other related software, including Bill.com, Stripe, Paypal, Convera Global Pay, etc.
- Strong knowledge of financial regulations, donor compliance, and reporting standards.
- Excellent Excel and data analysis skills.
- High level of integrity and attention to detail.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Good interpersonal and communication abilities.
- Knowledge of U.S. local tax laws and financial reporting requirements.
- Experience working with donor-funded projects
- This position is based in Washington, DC, USA. The selected candidate will work from the HQ office in Washington, DC, USA.
- Prior experience in a similar role with an international non-governmental organization.
