What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sr. Accountant position at Relatable?
Title: Senior Accountant
Reports to: Controller
Level: Senior individual contributor with review and mentorship responsibility; not currently a people manager
Review role: Second-stage reviewer for senior and staff accountants (preparer first-pass review happens before it reaches this role).
Close cadence: Team operates on a 5-business-day close cycle, with this role expected to complete assigned areas within the first 4 days
About the role
We're looking for a senior accountant who wants to own the work, not just execute it. You'll take full responsibility for a complex set of balance sheet and income statement accounts, work directly with the Controller, and serve as a key contributor on a team that is actively building with automation and AI-assisted workflows and tools.
This role is a strong fit for someone who can verify data independently — not just rely on what a tool tells them — and who finds the underlying problem in a reconciliation rather than just flagging the variance.
What you'll own
Monthly close — balance sheet
- Fixed asset and intangible asset reconciliations, including depreciation and amortization schedules
- Inventory accounting: in-transit, landed cost, reserves (obsolescence, shrink, NRV)
- Clearing account reconciliations
- Bank and credit card reconciliations (typically reviewed rather than prepared)
Monthly close — accrued liabilities
- Purchases, freight, duty, and tariff accruals (anchored to inventory receipts)
- Royalty accruals
- Commission accruals (typically reviewed rather than prepared)
Monthly close — D2C
- Reconciliation of D2C revenue, settlements, and payment processor activity across high transaction volume
- Marketplace reconciliations (Amazon, Shopify, Faire, Stripe, PayPal, etc.)
- D2C rebate and promotional accrual support
Monthly close — tax & compliance
- Sales tax balance sheet reconciliations
- Tax engine reconciliation/support (Avalara, TaxJar, Anrok, etc.)
- Commercial Rent Tax and indirect tax accruals
- Support external tax preparers with corporate, franchise, and state filings
Intercompany and multi-entity
- Intercompany reconciliations across entities
- Foreign currency revaluation (where applicable)
- Consolidation support
Review responsibilities
- Second-stage review of staff and senior accountant work
- Technical and judgment-level coaching, not just arithmetic checks
- Setting documentation and review-trail standards
Outside of close
- Year-end audit support: PBC requests, workpapers, schedules
- Annual field exam support for the bank credit line audit
- Own and maintain SOPs for all assigned accounts and the close process
- Identify and drive NetSuite and process improvements
- Maintain a strong understanding of how data flows from NetSuite into automation and AI tooling, and validate data integrity rather than relying on system outputs blindly
- Special projects: acquisition integration, system migrations, automation rollouts
Must-haves
- 5-8 years of accounting experience with full close ownership of multiple complex accounts
- Direct-to-consumer eCommerce reconciliation experience — credit card heavy, high transaction volume
- Sales tax balance sheet experience (not just compliance filing)
- Strong reconciliation judgment — finds the root cause, doesn't just flag the variance
- Strong operational mindset — able to work cross-functionally with operations, sales, and supply chain teams to resolve accounting and process issues in a fast-moving environment
- Comfort with automation and AI tooling, paired with strong independent data verification skills
- Working knowledge of US GAAP
- Review experience — has signed off on more junior work and provided meaningful technical feedback
- ERP fluency — able to navigate large ERP environments independently and understand upstream/downstream data flow impacts
Nice-to-haves
- Multi-entity accounting experience
- Foreign currency and intercompany experience for international entities
- NetSuite and QuickBooks experience
- Acquisition integration experience
- Exposure to close automation / AI tools (Claude cowork)
- Tax provision support experience
- Inventory-heavy industry tenure: consumer goods, wholesale, manufacturing, 3PL
Growth path
- Growth path includes expanded ownership across subsidiaries, close leadership responsibilities, process automation initiatives, and potential future people management opportunities as the team scales.
Ideal Background
- Experience in a consumer goods, wholesale, or D2C environment
- Experience supporting multiple subsidiaries/entities
- Strong understanding of inventory accounting, landed cost, and related accruals
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment where processes are still evolving, and continuous improvement is expected
