Assistant Director of Special Education
JOB TITLE: Assistant Director of Special Services
REPORTS TO: Director of Special Services, Superintendent of Schools
SUPERVISES: All personnel within the Special Education Department, including secretaries, teachers, educational technicians, school psychologists and service providers with consultation and under the supervision of the Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from a four-year post secondary institution with a masters degree in special education, education administration or a supportive service and 5 years of successful teaching experience required.
- Previous experience as a special education teacher, school administrator or evidence of leadership position(s) desirable.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Good working knowledge of special education programming and effective leadership. Knowledge of supervision and support of personnel and able to develop and provide professional development across many disciplines to staff. Ability to prepare and complete accurate reports and statements. Working knowledge of computer systems, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administration, school officials, teachers, vendors, and the general public. Knowledge and skills associated with budget development and monitoring required state and federal reports.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Administrator of Special Education Certificate (030) or Assistant Administrator of Special Education (035) from the Maine Department of Education required.
- Knowledge of the basic principle of personnel management, supervision and evaluation.
- Knowledge of State of Maine and Federal laws pertaining to education.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective and courteous working relationships with superiors, fellow workers, elected officials, students, parents, outside agencies, advocates, state and federal agencies, and members of the public at large.
- Ability to work with little or no supervision.
- Knowledge of methods of teaching special needs students.
- Knowledge of the latest research in all areas of special education.

Assistant Director of Special Services
- Knowledge of test administrations, scoring, and interpretation as it applies to special needs students.
- Knowledge of the budget process and required state and federal reports.
- Ability to lead and inspire others to excel by raising standards of staff and student outcomes.
- Knowledge of school and District policies concerning grading, instruction, and promotion.
- Knowledge of methods and techniques of student discipline and behavior modification for special needs students.
- Knowledge of latest developments in educating special needs students including use of adaptive equipment and computer programs.
EXAMPLES OF WORK (Illustrative Only):
- Contributes to the development of the total school philosophy of education.
- Assists with supervision and coordination all special education programs.
- Assists with the development of procedures for referral, securing medical reports, psychological examination, and placement.
- Assists in the recruitment, selection, and recommendation for hiring of any special education personnel.
- Assists with the responsibility for compiling, maintaining, and filing all reports, records, and other documents legally required and administratively useful.
- Assists in the administration of all collective bargaining agreements including grievance resolution at appropriate steps.
- Assists with budget development and expenditure control on established budgets for special education.
- Keeps informed of the state financial aid for special education.
- Assists Director with the interpretation of the objectives and programs of the special education services to the Board, administration, the staff, and the public at large.
- Assists with approval of supplies, materials, and texts used by special education personnel.
- Assists with planning, implementing and/or administering staff training and development as it relates to special education.
- Attends Board meetings as necessary.
- Performs other work as assigned by the Director of Special Services.
Salary : $83,910 - $92,742
