Registered Nurse (Emergency Department)- PRN

PRN position requires rotating shifts, a minimum of (2) 12 hour shifts in 6 weeks and a weekend rotation.

This position is responsible for the provision and promotion of optimal patient care in the Emergency Department.

• Has knowledge of EMTALA to render safe and thorough treatment to each emergency patient
• Has knowledge of an electronic medical record system
• Accountable for attendance to schedule shifts and required meetings.
• Capable of critical thinking in emergency situations
• Makes assessment of the patient’s current condition
• Communicates effectively with the providers
• Assists with patient transfers which includes but is not limited to contacting transfer centers, specialist and/or other facilities as directed by the ER provider
• Gives direct patient care acting as patient advocate
• Coordinates patient care with other departments verbally and through use of computer
• Communicates patient information and provider orders to appropriate personnel
• Assumes responsibility for carrying out provider orders
• Communicates needs for assistance
• Assures completion of forms, patient records and charges
• Assures the adequacy of department inventory/supplies
• Communicates effectively with medical staff, hospital personnel, patients and families
• Disseminates information through shift report activities
• Transports patients to other areas within the hospital and gives accurate, concise report to personnel assuming responsibility of patient care (nurse to nurse report)
• Reports patient admission status and condition to appropriate personnel including change of condition
• Responsible for discharge teaching of patient and family
• Assist with making follow-up appointments
• Is proficient at using the medication dispensing system to obtain medications for the patient
• Assures function and supplies for the crash cart in the department
• Facilitates obtaining patient's previous medical records
• Responds in a pleasant and respectful manner to consumer, staff, providers, and public

• Registered Nurse licensed in the State of Iowa
• At least two years of experience in emergency medicine or similar experience
• Current BLS and ACLS upon hire
• PALS certification (within 6-months of hire)
• TNCC certification (within 1 year of hire)
• Child and Dependent Adult Mandatory Reporter Training required
